H. W. gets assassinated because why not, the world is crazy sometimes. The GOP becomes more NE while Dems go more southern. This gives Dems an electoral lock from '96 to '16. Obama looks like he'll lose in 2016 but he gets assassinated shortly before election day and gets grief-vote posthumously elected, giving ticket-balancer Landrieu the reins for five years.
