For those of us who aren't 100% up to speed with canadian politics...can someone give us a list of safe or semi-safe ridings for the conservatives...I know pretty much anything in Alberta...but what about BC, Ontario...

I might be the only one who needs it...but the learning curve is a bit steeper for me

Thanks

Just so I know (and anyone else unsure about this), how do we determine how many candidates we have?  Just pull a number out of a hat?

That's up to your party- the more candidates you have, the higher your chance of having more votes.

You might want to take a look at this page and its great results map from 06: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Results_of_the_Canadian_federal_election%2C_2006

Well, yeah, but what I mean is what's stopping every single party from just putting down 308?

I expect a bit of common sense from everybody, I don't expect minor parties like FPNP or AAEVP to run 308.

Aha. Smiley

Well, considering that the Rhino Party's best showing candidate-wise was around 120 candidates, I guess I'll go with that number.

So without further ado...

Leader name: His Eminence Cornelius the Second (a lamb from Beacon Hill Petting Zoo - though not a rhinocerous in stature, we nonetheless knew on sight that it was His Eminence reborn)

Leader home riding: Victoria

Number of candidates: 120

Candidate Groupings:

BC: 36 candidates (strongest province)
AB: 17 candidates
SK: 12 candidates
MB: 10 candidates
ON: 10 candidates
QC: 24 candidates
NB: 2 candidates
NS: 2 candidates
PE: 2 candidates
NL: 2 candidates
NT: 1 candidate
YK: 1 candidate
NU: 1 candidate

(I don't know how specific you want this.)

Main point of platforms:

- Our platform is made of sturdy cedar, and is roughly yea high.

- Our position is currently 48° 25′ N and 123° 21′ W.  We feel this puts us more in line with Victoria as a whole than any other party.  In addition, we feel that our candidates, having different positions among each of them, are just as much in line with their respective ridings.

- We strongly feel that one must have a very strong ground in mathematics in order to be a successful prime minister of Canada, because one can't very well minister primes unless one knows what they are.

- We feel that global warming is a serious issue, and will tirelessly fight to ban the presence of heaters within social studies classrooms.

- We strongly support renaming the Northwest Territories to the Kind Of In the Middle But Certainly More Northwest Than Before Nunavut Got Chopped Off Territories.

- We believe that small businesses are the future of Canada.  Consequently, we will require that no store or office building be more than one storey in height and 200 square feet in area.  We will recruit people from the bonsai industry to develop ways of making businesses smaller than you have ever seen them before.

- We strongly support the independence of Columbia from Britain, as we feel that the tyranny of the British Empire has held its people down for far too long.

- We feel that the notion of green energy is overrated.  We will strongly push for a greater emphasis on violet energy, given that it has been scientifically proven to be higher.

- As always, above all, we promise that we will never keep a single promise.

More positions, of course, exist, but it would be tiresome to enumerate every longitude and latitude that is present within Canada, so I will let the ensuing campaign speak for itself.

That's great, Gabu, could serve as a model for others.

I would personally recommend that the Liberals, Conservatives, NDP, and Green run a full slate, and the Bloc runs 75 candidates in every QC riding.

CultureKing- Sure why not? Jump right in!

Liberal - Al
Conservative - bullmoose88
NDP - EarlAW
Bloc Quebecois - Bacon King
Green - Colin Wixted
Rhino - SoFA Gabu
First Peoples National - Lewis
Animal Alliance Environment Voters - ilikeverin
Absolutely Absurd - Jas
Christian Heritage - Cultureking

Well, I certainly do hope that others follow suit in building their platforms, because Lord knows BC's lumber industry is in need of a boost.

Leader name: Peter Vander Zaag
Leader home riding: Simcoe—Grey

Number of candidates: The Canadian Heritage Party is proud to announce that it will be running the most candidates in its life; 70, 7 more than in the break-through year when the CHP caught over 100,000 votes and over 3.5% in the ridings in which it participated in. In this coming election the CHP is looking to do even better nationally and seat its first MP.

Candidate Groupings:
Strong Province --> Alberta: 11
Strong Province --> Manitoba: 13
Strongest Province --> Ontario: 25
Saskatchewan: 3
Manitoba: 2
British Columbia: 11
Prince Edward Island: 1
Nova Scotia: 1
Quebec: 3

Main point of platforms:
1) That Canada be ruled in accordance with and inspired by the bible and god.
2) The idea that marriage is between a man and a woman
3) The support of increased humanitarian aid across to the rest of the world
4) The support of parents and families with govermental help (includes funding if needed)
5) *CHANGE versus real policy* Opposition to the American led Iraq war
6) The suppor of life for all human beings, whether out of the womb or no

Absolutely Absurd Party
Leader name:
The AAP doesn't have a 'leader' per se. Instead the party is run a like an anarcho-syndicalist commune, with members taking it in turns to act as a sort of executive officer each week. But all the decisions of that officer must be approved at a bi-weekly meeting by a simple majority in the case of purely internal procedural affairs, but a two-thirds majority on all other business.

But, for the want of form filling and all that malarchy, our honourary leader Fluffy, should fit the bill nicely.

Leader home riding:
Cardigan

Number of candidates: 42

Candidate Groupings:
Newfoundland & Labrador - 4
Prince Edward Island - 4 (Strongest Province)
Nova Scotia - 3
New Brunswick - 1
Quebec - 0 (The AAP consider Quebec to be absurd enough, and reccomend a good dose of sensibleness immediately.)
Ontario - 16
Manitoba - 3
Saskatchewan -1
Alberta - 3
British Columbia - 4
Nunavut - 1
Northwest Territories - 1
Yukon - 1

Main point of platforms:
Our platform, being oval in shape, doesn't have a point on it.
It's usually used as a tray to help carry the teas/coffees for party meetings, if that's what you're getting at.

Leader name: Al Sibboleth (ousted the real life PM, lets say, a few weeks ago)
Leader home riding: Etobicoke North
Number of candidates: 308
Candidate Groupings:

BC: 36
Alberta: 28 (weakest province)
Saskatchewan: 14
Manitoba: 14
Ontario: 106 (strongest province)
Quebec: 75
New Brunswick: 10
Nova Scotia: 11
PEI: 4
Newfoundland: 7
Yukon: 1
NWT: 1
Nunavut: 1

Main points of platform:

*Introduce major reforms to the healthcare sector, with the goal of reducing private sector involvement (which will greatly reduce the financial cost in the long term, enabling more money to be spent on patients) and cutting waiting lists.
*Cut GST with the object of, eventually, abolishing it.
*Raise corporate tax to 25%
*Reduce income tax for the bottom 50% (the greatest decreases towards the bottom 15% or so)
*Increase income tax for the highest 20% (the greatest increases for the top 5%)
*Employment Insurance to be increased and the "reforms" of the '90's to be reversed.
*No mention of gun control
*Will introduce new ethics guidelines

"lard"

(seriously)

And if you want to make it really officially French, it should be "Roi du lard".

I'm aware of that...my question is...some posters have said strongest/weakest province...am I constricted to saying strongest province to that which historically is the CPC's strongest province...or does it have some influence on races...in which case I might want to use it as a booster in Ontario...or Quebec/BC/ other marginal areas that I need to turbo charge.

Historically strongest province, which would be Alberta.

However, that's a little detail and does not matter to me much.
