Passing this map on from 1990.

Passed 69-31

And this passed 61/39

This passed 58/42

There have to be more lottery maps out there somewhere.

States without lotteries: Alabama, Alaska, Arkansas, Hawaii, Mississippi, Nevada (!), Utah, and Wyoming.

That's pretty interesting, that majority black county in the panhandle voted against it and it's obviously 20 years ago. I'm suprised that Escambia voted for it though.

What is the rationale for opposing lotteries?

Uhh, besides a) the morality (no gambling!), b) quasi regressive tax on the poor ones?

(I suspect Nevada's casinos may have had a hand in keeping lotteries out)

Because the liars that run it claim they are giving millions to the school system when they have been proven to be frauds.

I'm tired of PA giving its proceeds to senior citizens.

Well in Florida the state & lottery commission has lied about the amount of money actually given to the schools. The claim 1 billion dollars, when investigated it was far far less then that.

Heh, yeah.

I enjoy a good scratch off ticket now and then, but I dont see how this money goes towards seniors (which PA ranks 2nd for % over 65, behind florida).

How do you make a map?  Does the data have to be from an official source?  I have the Texas results from 1991 from a newspaper.

I don't the SOS data goes back that far (and their web site is non-reachable right now).

Something similar happened in Ohio after the lottery was introduced here.  They promised all this money for education but then the legislator essentially diverted it to cover other expenses instead.  That was one of the reasons the slot machine proposition failed here last year.  People didn't trust that the tax money would really go to education like they claimed.

Maryland's results go back a long way because they put the registers in their state archives.

Virginia's results only go back to 1996.

Not really, depending on your beliefs on what lottery money should/could be used for.
