I find it contradictory that many states criminalize private gambling but have a public lottery.

The lottery in Georgia funds the HOPE scholarship here - all in-state students with a 3.0 GPA or higher get free tuition in state schools. A lottery is a creative way to raise money for programs people like without having to forcibly take taxes from people's paychecks.

Is wasting money on the lottery taking care of your money? No.
What are your chances of winning? Astronomical against it. There are so many better things you could do with the money. Go take the kids out to eat and spend some time together. Buy your wife or kids something they really want with it. You might argue that that sounds crazy, but, that's just the way I feel. Also, as a Christian, I don't believe that wasting your money on a lottery is good stewardship of what God has given you.

The biggest difference would probably be that we believe each individual church should be independent. There shouldn't be a larger governing body.

I say if you don't like the lottery, don't play it. Nobody is forcing you. I agree there's better things you can do with your money, but who am I to tell people what they can and can't spend their money on? And the lottery is cheap - one or two bucks for a ticket - you aren't wasting much if you play it only on occassion(like when the jackpot is really big or something). And people who play the lotto in my state fund education - that's not wasteful if you ask me.

The great lie here in Florida is that so much of the money is going to schools. They broke down the numbers and found that since the lottery started here under 10% actually went to the schools. The majority went to advertising and other undisclosed uses. That is why I am against it because I believe the money is not going where it should go, to the schools.

Our state government has done a good job making sure that most of the money goes to the right place - the HOPE. Sounds like Florida government needs to start teaching the people who run the program about fiscal responsibility.

Same thing with the casinos here in MS.

According to an article I just read, 28.8% of Georgia's lotto goes to HOPE and pre-kindergatren programs this year. The revenue for the 2004 fiscal year(which ended June 30) was $2.71 billion, total amount spent on education $782 million. Quite sizeable all things considered. I'm satisfied with the program here.

Here's the article if you're interested, but you have to sign up: http://www.ajc.com/news/content/metro/0704/15hope.html?UrAuth=`N^NUObNYUbTTUWUXUUUZT[UUUWU\U^UZUbU`UcTYWYWZV

No - other.

The Lottery in VA is nothing more that a state monopoly on gambling.  All of the money was supposed to have been for education, but the schools aren't seeing it.  Better would be to legalize gambling and get the state out of it.

The only advertising here is on the radio, some billboards too, but those are rare. Where do they advertise in your state?
