I know this probably isn't the right place on a technical level, but I figure it will get the most responses.

Is there any way to map % of residents with a graduate degree, and separately with a bachelor's degree, by Census block groups (or, less ideally, tracts?)

I can't get the Census site to do this...I'm trying to get myself a map of this for Seattle and surrounding areas.  I could swear Al posted a map that displayed this (contrasting rental populations and black population with bachelor's degrees).

So, can anyone help me?  Smiley

I can find the data at that level on the American Fact Finder site, though not a way of turning it into a map (though someone who understands technical stuff better than me would probably know how). It's under detailed tables, see...

But I have found a site with that data in map form (www.socialexplorer.com).

Here's a screenshot thingy:

Hope that helps

O/c it's possible that I misinterpreted what you said. Maps showing % with bachelor degree are on the American FactFinder thing (look under thematic maps)

Perfect.  Exactly what I wanted!  But the damn thing just confirmed my thesis without presenting any real exceptions.  Grr.

Is this information available at the block group level?  Do you know?  That would be great for comparison's sake.

Edit: I did check thematic maps.  I don't see it.  Could you link me to the resulting page?

Doesn't seem to be working for me either. Mind you, I've been up since 5am so...

An alternative source of the same maps would be here: http://fastfacts.census.gov/home/cws/main.html

Thanks again, but that doesn't seem to let me go much below CD.

I also wish the SocialExplorer site would allow you to view all people with college degrees or greater.  As it is, you can only view step-by-step.  But I guess beggars can't be choosers...still some very interesting stuff.

Actually you can get lower-level maps there (census only though). Here's one:

I still can't find it on the CS site, but the main Census site seems to be working, now.  I still can't find education information, though.  Does that even exist at the block group level?

I have a feeling that there's significant correlation between advanced education level and voting Dem in the Seattle area, and would like to confirm it in greater detail.

American Fact Finder
Data Set: 2000 Census (Sample SF-3)
Select Thematic Map.

Select County as Geographic Area, and Washington/King County.

Select Theme TM-P042 (%of population > 25 with bachelors degree or higher).  I didn't see a theme for graduate degrees.

Once the map is displayed, you can change the sub-area from county subdivision, to census tracts or block groups.

A different SF!  I'm such an idiot.  Thanks, Jim.  I owe you a cyberbeer.
