Who are the most fascinating, but lesser-known, British monarchs? And what makes them fascinating?

(neither of the Elizabeths, no Henry the 8th, no George the 3rd, no Victoria, etc.)

I wouldn't call him fascinating, but Edward VI's reign was tragically ironic.

His father moves (almost literally) heaven and earth, ends centuries-long institutions in England all in the name of having a male heir to succeed him. And the poor boy dies six years in.

Ultimately his legacy was saved and enhanced with Elizabeth's reign, but Edward is forgotten when he was meant to be the star of the show.

James I of Scotland (1394-1437, reigned 1424-37).  Was captured by the English on his way to France in 1406, held captive for 18 years.  Assassinated in 1437.  Opinion was divided at the time--and has been ever since--about whether he was a great leader who did what needed to be done or a "bloody tyrant," as one history of Scotland put it.  He was an accomplished poet, musician and sportsman.

George I, of the House of Hanover, who did not speak English, at least for part of his reign.

Edward IV really doesn't get the due he deserves because he's overshadowed by his brother and grandson's exploits.

I don’t think any British monarchs are lesser-known. There have only been 13 of them, after all.

Would you describe William IV as "well known" ?

Eadwig!!!

Although most historians don't believe that story given that Eadwig's brother Edgar considered Eadwig's wife, Aelfgifu, family and granted her land in his charters. Not something he would've done if she'd behaved that embarrassingly at the coronation. Most think it was just propaganda meant to make Dunstan (who Eadwig had exiled) look good as the guy who broke it up.
