A January research study completed by the Pew Research Center (Election 2006 Online - Pew Research Study) suggests that more Americans are relying on the internet as a source of political news. Ron and his wife Carol Credit: www.ronpaul2008.com Copyright: www.ronpaul2008.com Enlarge + As such, the recent online success the Republican presidential candidate Ron Paul has achieved should not be immediately discounted, as suggested by political pundits such as Rush Limbaugh.

There is another factor. The internet attracts people who are really thinking about the political future of the nation. The people still stuck to their TVs aren't really paying that much attention and just memorize sound bytes.

But as we get closer to the real election, based on trends seen in 2000 and 2004, those TV people will turn to the Internet people for insights to the candidates.

This may well be the election which destroys the ability of the mainstream media to pre-screen candidates.

And if I have anything to say about it, this will be the election that makes AIPAC money the kiss of political death in American elections.

There isn't a snowball's chance in hell that the GOP would select Ron Paul, let alone because of internet popularity. There are plenty of candidates that a lot of people see and think that they'd be wonderful in government positions, but those candidates will never have the access and advantages to succeed in our current political system without serious reform. It's a shame, really.

Ron Paul's popularity online is largely due to his outspoken stances on our current foreign policy, but many of his other positions are found to be on the fringes. You have to give him credit for being consistent and honest, though.

And while it may be good that there is interest on researching candidates online, it obviously doesn't influence the 'real world' popularity of a particular candidate. At least not right now. Paul and Gravel are making waves online but will never go beyond the single digits in the polls.

I think if you took a poll of people that genuinely care about politics, as in read about politics every day, Paul and Gravel would have higher numbers. But when you combine those people with people that only casually follow politics or just show up and vote for a pre-selected candidate, the Paul and Gravel types get diluted. It's not possible to only casually follow politics and vote for a Paul and Gravel type, the casual political news followers are all your mainstreams guys and gal.
