What would have happened had Michael Dukakis not ridden in the tank with the goofy thumbs-up? Would he have won, or would it be Bush Sr?

It wouldn't have made a difference, the Dukakis campaign was a herd jumping off a cliff.

Bush wins, but it is about 2% closer.  This flips a few states (PA, IL and MD) and generally prevents the election from being considered a blowout.

This would affect the primaries 4 years later.

Yeah, Bush sr might not look so unbeatable, dems nominate a conventional candidate (not clinton) but lose.

2-3% swing to Dukakis.
