It's going to be bad enough to have visuals that the right wing media will have a field day with.

Potentially a very serious problem.  Default expectation is something on par with 1968, which says something.

Depends on a lot of factors but one of the most important we won't know to the last minute is the weather.

Chicago does get rain in the summer and rain would be Biden's best friend here if it happened.

Hamas has made clear there will not be a ceasefire, because they will only accept a total Israeli surrender.

“Biden, Harris, you can’t hide, we charge you with genocide!”

I wish they could come up with some new chants.  Protests are seriously the most uncreative things on the planet and it's annoying how proud of themselves they are for this stuff.  It's the same vibe as a fourteen year old who comes up to you and proudly says "hey I just had this wild idea, what if our whole world is a simulation and nothing is real?  Did I blow your mind?"

Mild to moderate. This election just has very little juice in general compared to the last two.

These students are an absolute embarrassment.

My assumption when I see lily white kids at Columbia and other Ivies protesting is that they grew up in boring rich sheltered suburbs and are trying to add meaning to their life.

Chicago has a high concentration of the people who would protest

It will be summer so they won't be in school/working

There is easy transport to the United Center

The DNC is probably going to be boring so the media will want to cover protests and coverage will breed more protesting

So I don't see a way for it to be less than moderate given your description.

But Biden will only look bad if he comes across as weak and impotent. So the protestors would actually need to disrupt the convention itself, which I think is a tall ask. The security measures for a US president mean that impeding his motorcade or actually penetrating any bubble he's in is almost impossible. But yeah if like a bunch of people light themselves on fire outside the United Center it will be gross and ghoulish but I don't think shifts any votes.

Smaller than 2016. Given some news coverage no matter how small they are so CNN can claim they're being fair and balanced.

It will depend on how relevant the Gaza situation remains.

Probably mild to moderate at best...or worst?

But in terms of optics, even if they aren't that big or disruptive, it will garner a lot attention and distract from the convention speeches.

Ideally there's a permanent cease-fire by then. If not, likely mild to moderate. I have doubts about how much salience a foreign war that the U.S. is not directly involved in can spin up, no matter how ugly, after seeing the limited impact of the Uncommitted movement. But I hope I'm wrong.

They will be inflated for the simple reason that this is by far the most boring presidential election since 1996 and the media is desperate for some action.

The DNC lineup of greatest hits will attract the MSNBC crowd, but Buttigieg, Whitmer, Polis will just bore the normies. So CNN, Fox, and the international media will go out of their way to find violence.

No it's not. The youth doesn't care in the way it did back then.

Boring might not be the best word. Embarrassing leading to apathy I think is a better view of the situation. The fact that these are the two candidates again highlights the problem with both parties at the present moment.

And yes, the convention will be bad. Not 1968, but likely the worst since.

Where's the "small groups gather, but they get disproportionate coverage" option?

Worth pointing out 1968 saw significant chaos INSIDE the hall as well. Humphrey had 68% of delegates but that's a lot of delegates and notables making floor fights.

Biden will have ~99% of delegates (he's dropped about 30 so far and will peobably drop a handful more in KY and WV). The room will be filled with delegates hand selected by the campaign.

No one has anything to say. Biden is basically running on the Democratic message from 2022 which means we are in year three of it. Trump is barely running on anything.

Trump is not campaigning. Biden seems to be going through the motions.

Behind both, there are actually no longer serious ideological differences between the parties when it comes to a vision of the country.

Biden has largely hewed to Trump's conclusions about Iran's intentions, China's ambitions, the necessity of India, the harm de-industrialization has done to the United States, and the belief in a de-globalized future where we want to be self-sufficient or have a close group of allies.

So what we get is a lot of personal attacks over immigration where it is unclear where the genuine policy differences are(Trump wants a more dramatic and brutal version of more or less what Biden has drifted into), Crime(how serious is it, but people think it is bad), and education(standards have collapsed, discipline is gone, kids are going feral - whose fault is it? - Woke NB trans communists? Chinese anti-semites controlling TikTok? Russians under our beds?).

No one is even talking about housing or the collapse of the insurance market in large parts of the country. Environmental discourse has collapsed into spreadsheets and buzzwords that few understand.

So what is the news? Does Biden give another speech on abortion? Another trial day?

Protestors setting things on fire is probably the only interesting that can happen at the DNC. No one expects any of the speeches to say anything substantial because almost no one expects anyone to say anything of substance this year.

Oh I’d agree with you if it weren’t as close as it was, and polling was not a revolving gear between “Biden’s got this” and “Trump’s gonna be number 47”
