Columbia is well on its way to being CUNY-Morningside at this rate. With the 90K tuition. At least the CUNYs don't cost much

Why’s being like CUNY supposed to be an threat?

It's so weird to see leftists bring up police killing protestors. I haven't seen anyone on the right advocate for this, which is surprising how we keep being told they very self-evidently want it. I'm starting to wonder if it's in fact the leftists who keep bringing this up who actually want to see it and feigning concern to voice this opinion...

Holy hell.

Talk about trying to mischaracterise an argument!  Kent State did not happen on the orders of politicians; it happened because Guardsmen got itchy trigger fingers after politicians wanted to look tough by sending armed soldiers onto a university campus which ended in an entirely predictable result.

Kent State was not a "protest"; it was a riot.

What is going on at Columbia right now is criminal activity.  False imprisonment of people.  Destruction of property.  Blocking ingress and egress.  Occupying buildings in a manner which constitutes burglary.
These people have not been exercising their 1st Amendment rights for some time.

To minimize the destruction of property in all of this is, of course, ignorant.  The right to Property is on a par with the right to Life and the right to Liberty; it is not to be taken without due process of law.  And it is a right that is to be defended by the government, and it is a right people have the right to defend.

People the World over come to America because in so much of the World, people can just have their stuff taken by people solely because they can.  Some of it is racial or ethnic concerns that drive the deprivation of property rights.  Some of it is simply because you're a political enemy.  Millions of people who came to America legally were people who suffered this in their home countries and were grateful that America wouldn't be like that.

You supported an attempted self-coup; if these people were Trunp supporters, you would gladly be on their side.

These people are absolutely ridiculous. This is so over the top. So now Columbia University - a school that has nothing to do with Israel and Gaza - is now responsible for "40,000 deaths" in Gaza?

They have truly lost the plot. This is the same as the QAnon-level people saying Starbucks is a conspirator in genocide at this point. Words have lost all meaning bc of these people

yeah, I don't get it either, this is so stupid. I really hope very few of them actually are "true believers" here and the rest were caught up in the hype but that doesn't mean it's ok.

If they had protested outside like, an embassy/consulate, or protested outside the UN, or something like that, it'd make more sense because it's foreign policy related. What in the world is Columbia responsible for? Buying some s**t from people in Israel? Unless they did something like paid for a bomb to have "love from Columbia" written on it and dropped on an apartment building then no, it had no f**King impact.

1.  J6 was not an attempted coup.  There was rioting that got out of hand.

2.   I support the prosecution of J6ers who actually committed crimes.  I oppose them being upcharged, being denied their Constitutional Rights (including the rights to counsel, to reasonable bail, and to not be subject to cruel and unusual punishments, particularly in the pre-trial phase.

As for the National Guard on J6:

https://www.foxnews.com/politics/trump-alleges-pelosi-turned-down-10000-soldiers-capitol-riot-responsible-jan-6

Quote
The decision on whether to call National Guard troops to the Capitol is made by what is known as the Capitol Police Board, which is made up of the House sergeant at arms, the Senate sergeant at arms and the architect of the Capitol. The board decided not to call the Guard ahead of Jan. 6 but did eventually request assistance after the rioting had already begun, and the troops arrived several hours later, according to the Associated Press.

If you want to call me on an issue, do your homework.

These protests will hurt the image of DEI in the middle term, but I don´t think it should be banned from companies.

So when the police arrest all these protesters, are they going to be immediately released and not charged by the prosecutors with crimes? That's what they did in the George Floyd Riots.

Watching on CNN, I'm guessing at this point at least 40 people arrested on buses.

A hilarious clip, in which one of the leaders demands that Columbia bring them food and water (while they illegally occupy campus buildings) for “humanitarian” reasons. At the root of it all is sort of a narcissistic jealousy that the Palestinians get to experience the excitement of hardship and oppression while they have to live their peaceful, wealthy, boring lives here in America.

I support giving them food and water. In jail.

Reminds me of the Bundy clan occupation of the Malheur Wildlife refuge in Oregon.  These "outdoorsmen" forgot to bring food and water, so they had to tell their followers to bring these items.  Oh, but these fundamentalist Mormons did remember to bring beer, and one Nazi compatriot brought his radio transmission equipment to broadcast his Nazi propaganda.

Seems protesters have moved en bloc to CCNY.

Journalists have been pushed off the Columbia campus by NYPD as well per this lady talking on CNN that's apparently also a student.

Columbia University has requested the NYPD maintain a police presence on campus until May 17th.

Columbia is an Ivy League school (prestige). Its reputation is being tanked by the protesters so badly that it will be no more prestigious than a CUNY if they don't fix this fast

Columbia's masters programs is increasingly turning into a degree mill anyway.

This dude on CNN, Mahmoud Khalil, started his bit by saying it's shameful that on the 55th anniversary of 1968 student protests, the school would kick out anti-Israel protesters.  Where does this sense of entitlement come from?  When did the 1968 student protests, which were widely opposed by the silent majority and a political disaster for the anti-war party, become this sacred thing?  Some students protested in 1968, so now every protest is sacred?  C'mon.

Now he's complaining that the school wouldn't bring them blankets when they tried to illegally sleep over in the building they broke into.  FFS

It’s not like Columbia has a robust history of radical protest, right? Hamilton Hall was never occupied before, right?

1968 (late 60s, early 70s) was way, way different...

--Young American men actually had skin in the game. They were getting drafted and sent off to war in Vietnam. There are no American troops in Israel/Gaza. There were about a half million American GIs in Vietnam at its peak.
--Young American women had skin in the game. Their boyfriends, husbands, brothers, etc. were being sent to war.
--Very few protesters wore masks in the Vietnam era. These people are afraid to show their faces.
--There were radicals in the Vietnam protest movement but they were a far lower percentage of the actual size of the protest, especially at its peak in the late 60s, early 70s.
--There was a little undercurrent of anti-Semitism in the most radical element of the Vietnam protest movement but the Jewish-American students helped charge those protests back in the 60s. Anti-Semitism is the primary motive for these protesters in 2024 (chanting 'intifada revolution' is a call for violence, not peace).

OK so this has been a pretty bitter thread but can we just all agree that it's good that this is over and no one got killed? Hopefully the people at Columbia can actually get ready for their finals now.

Okay but they were morally in the right, right? Regardless of their effectiveness, which can certainly be discussed vis-a-vis these protests, do you think the Vietnam War - the thing they were protesting - was good or bad?

They’re not isolated incidents. It’s part of the culture at Columbia (and most prestigious universities).
