Methinks McClure is the least terrible for the first, and Church is the only really good one. Len Jordan was actually alright, but he no longer makes the cut.

He was an exceptionally good Senator. Democrats lost some really solid incumbents in 1980...

It really was the end of an era and not for the better. I'm not even talking about policy, but just what it did to Congress (and particularly the Senate) as an institution. What's even crazier though is that Barry Goldwater almost lost in 1980.

Of course, he also compounded the tragedy by dying early. Honestly, Idaho didn't deserve him. He and Borah are about the only talented people they've ever elected.

Borah was really bad on race issues, which may have harmed his odds in 1936.
