Would never have happened, I know, but nonetheless, here's the scenario

In February, 2004, Secretary of State Colin Powell, citing insurmountable differences in international policies between himself and President Bush, "with much soul searching and with much regret," resigns as Secretary of State.

In March of 2004, after victories in most of the Super Tuesday states, John Kerry wins the Democratic Presidential nomination.  In early May, John Kerry contacts Colin Powell personally, and tells him he would be "honored" if he, Powell, would be his Vice Presidential running mate.  Kerry tells Powell, "As Vice President in my administration, I can assure you that you would be able to continue to make significant contributions to the nation and on the world stage.  I am asking you to at least consider it."

Powell discusses the matter with his wife, who agrees that if her husband wants to take on this challenge, she would support him.  Powell advises Kerry in early June that he would accept the Vice Presidential nomination on the Kerry ticket.

On July 6, 2004, shortly before the Democratic National Convention, Kerry stuns the Democratic Party, the Republican Party, and the nation, by announcing his surprise pick of former Head of the Joint Chiefs of Staff and former Secretary of State Colin Powell as his running mate.  Powell and his wife then join Kerry and his wife on the stage.  It had been a closely guarded secret prior to the announcement, known only to Kerry, his wife, Powell, his wife, and to Kerry's closest advisers.  Powell and his wife change their political registrations to Democratic that same day.  Kerry and Powell did not want anyone to suspect anything, so it was decided they would wait until the day of the announcement to change their registrations.

Powell receives an overwhelming show of support at the Democratic National Convention, and the Democrats unite behind the Kerry/Powell ticket, even though Powell had been a Republican up until that time, and even though he worked in the administration of President George W Bush.

2004 Election

Republican
President George W Bush (TX)
Vice President Dick Cheney (WY)

Democrat
Senator John Kerry (MA)
Former Head of Joint Chiefs of Staff, former Secretary of State Colin Powell (NY)

(I know both Kerry and Powell are from neighboring northeastern states, however, both Clinton and Gore were from neighboring southern states in 1992 and 1996)

How does this 2004 election turn out?

Maps?

It would be harder for Bush to attack Kerry on national security, and thus Kerry wins, though it's still fairly close:

Nader would have done much better with no "real" democratic ticket. Although, it wouldn't matter because many Republicans would vote Kerry.

I disagree. Nader was much too hated by many on the left for throwing the election to Bush. besides, it's not like Colin Powell is a fire-breathing right-winger. He could quite easily be a moderate to conservative democrat.
