two smartest choices for hillary:

governor manchin of west va.

or

governor ritter of colorado

Manchin would be an excellent choice,He is socially conservative and would help shed the image of a Northeastern liberal that Hillary has. Ritter wouldn't be a good choice at this time however since he has pissed off organized labor and one that got out that would hurt Hillary Clinton among once of the crucial parts of her base.

I think Bill Richardson or Mark Warner would help her the most.

What has Ritter done other than being a Governor for less than a year?

phil, since when do you have to do anything in order to be selected as a running mate?  what did john edwards ever do?

He served a six-year term in the Senate. Billl Ritter will have been in the Governor's Mansion for less than two years.

Exactly.

I imagine whomever the Dem Presidential pick is, the VP will be someone obscure, likeable and not really at the forefront of the campaign - in order to contrast with Cheney.

I don't think Hillary would care about extending an olive brank to the liberal wing of the Democrats. I think she would probably go with another moderate such as Vilsack or Bayh, maybe Warner. I would give the edge to Bayh simply because Bill Clinton seems to be a fan of his and would probably push for his selection.

Tom Vilsack has been kissing Hillary's ass ever since he dropped out.  So he's probably on the top of her list.

I agree on that.

Hillary will pick whomever is her strongest opponent for VP.  Right now, that would be Obama, and I suspect it will be when we reach Feb. 5.

Hillary is too good of a student to forget what happened in 1988.

To my knowledge, the Clintons's friends are Bayh, Clark, and Richardson. Richardson has fallen out of favor recently, and while Southwestern governor sounds good, Hillary won't jeopardize her presidential ambition by running alongside another minority. Clark is a tried loser and he might interefere with Hillary's national security credentials ego. That leaves Bayh, a rather conservative choice, but someone whom Bill Clinton says might "be president someday."

I'd agree with that, but I'd lean towards Bayh at the moment.  Richardson has to prove himself a bit more on the campaign trail in the next few months before he can become the premier VP candidate--so far, he's only hurting his chances.

Clark or Bayh I think.  Bayh because he is a popular senator from Indiana and is very moderate, and Clark because he has history with the Clintons and would help Hillary in terms of national security.

I know it was some time ago when you wrote this but what do you mean by falling out of favor? Out of favor with Hillary or in general? Did something happen 2 months ago?
