No way that a Republican loses Vermont in 1980.

Maine likely goes GOP too—the hell do they care about the Kennedy family?

Kennedy would probably have done better than Carter because he could have run against the Carter administration as hard as Reagan did, but Reagan still would have won in all likelihood. I don't think he ever would have chosen Dole as a running mate, though. Also, if Kennedy had run, John Anderson might not have.

One thing's for sure: a Vice-Presidential debate between Dole and Hollings would have been the nastiest in history.
