In 1980, President Carter, trailing Senator Ted Kennedy in polls for the Democratic nomination, drops out of the race, and supports Kennedy.  Kennedy is nominated at the convention, and selects South Carolina Senator Fritz Hollings as his running mate.  On the GOP side, California Governor Ronald Reagan dominates the primaries, and selects Kansas Senator Bob Dole as his running mate.  Discuss with maps.

Dude, that is like saying a soldier can't be elected because he's killed someone.  I know I know, it's not the same thing but Kennedy made a mistake one night and a girl died in the process.  It's not all his fault.  She knew he was drunk, butt she rode with him anyway.  He regrets his mistake to this day.

Did you honestly equate Ted Kennedy driving off a bridge drunk to a brave soldier killing the enemy?  Was Mary Jo part of al-Qaeda or something?

No, I'm just stating the fact that you can not blame him entirely for an ACCIDENT.

What about the part where he swam home, than slept before calling the cops? Accident as well?

I agree with DWTL, Kennedy gets swamped. There is no way he was going to get elected President after that, ever.

Would'nt you be in shock after something like that?  Or have you never been in a car accident or known anyone who has?  One of my friends was in a car accident near her house, got out and walked home.

He wasn't too shocked to go home and contact his lawyer and leave the scene of the accident without Mary Jo

I don't know maybe he was so drunk he didn't know what he was doing when he left.
I think the first gut instinct of a normal, at least sober, person is to call the cops right a way and pray to God that somehow the other person will be able to be saved. Not go home and sleep. Either way he should not have been driving drunk in the first place which shows an amazing lack of judgment.

Meanwhile comparing this to a soldier in A WAR ZONE is an all around bad analogy. There is no evidence to support that Mary Jo was attacking him that I'm aware of.

Either way I say Reagan wins. Reagan has the charisma Dole has experience and Kennedy just has his name and a pocket full of scandal. Reagan would probably do as well, or maybe a little worse, than he did in the real 1980.

O, I'm not saying Kennedy would win.  I just think he would do at least a little better than Carter did.

Yeah.. he was driving drunk, drove his car off a bridge, and waited till the next day to inform the authorities of what happened.

Is he human, yes. Did he murder her? No, not really. Did he screw up big time? Yes. He shouldn't have gone to bed, he shouldn't have called his lawyer first, and he shouldn't have been driving.

I agree that that was the worst mistake of his life and it was stupid, however I like Ted Kennedy quite alot despite this enourmous mistake due to his views on issues.

Yeah, I heard that Charlie Manson favored a flat tax, probably should mount a write-in campaign for him

Yeah, murder is killing another person intentionally, Ted Kennedy's action constitute (I don't want to go above your head but) depraved indifference.

Compared to OTL 1980, Reagan loses Massachusetts and gains Georgia.
