I don't see why not. Let's not forget that Daschle was the Democratic leader in the Senate until he failed to win reelection a few years ago.

But there are more safe seats in the House than the Senate.

Yes..and? Daschle was done in by Frist, Rove, and Bush. Pelosi isn't going anywhere unless she is defeated in a primary.

Reread the question. I don't think that Pelosi will be the Speaker for the next 93 years.

By way of comparison, during the 20th century not a single British serving Prime Minister lost their seat (the emphasis being on "serving"; quite a few had lost there seats in elections before they became P.M (Churchill managed to do so on several different occasions) and others came very close to doing so (Wilson hung onto Huyton in 1950 by just 834 votes), while some others (Balfour, Asquith, MacDonald) lost theirs when they'd left no.10).

There's no reason, in a FPTP system, to have a leader who holds a marginal seat.

It's certainly possible. I'd say yes. Certainly not with Pelosi, but look at the GOP leadership who almost lost last year (Pryce, Reynolds, Doolittle, DeLay would've lost had he run). Based on that, it's certainly possible for a Speaker to be sitting in a 55-45 seat, and lose election because of personal and party unpopularity.

Reread my answer. I didn't say that Pelosi would be Speaker that long. I was commenting on Daschle, on how he was done in. He was the democratic leader from a strong Republican state, and those three helped do him in.

Yes, especially if the state legislature of his/her state doesn't like him/her and draws the districts to make it possible.

Probably.

Ah, Tom Foley... The only Democratic Representative I've ever had. Sad
