What if George W. Bush had real well known opponents in the primaries for the GOP nom?  Notably, John McCain, Lamar Alexander and Fred Thompson.

What? I see question marks, but I don't see a question. More of a confusing statement about nothing.

 Are you asking what if Bush had well known opponents in the primary? If so, I don't think anything would happen. Bush was still somewhat liked, and still had a real possibility of winning re-election. The GOP knew that if he were forced into a primary, that would be the end of their rule in the White House.

 Maybe that wouldn't have been such a bad idea.
