Correction: it's definitely not a good idea, from either a PR or strategic perspective. From a PR perspective, it makes NATO look like evil Zionists to the Muslim world and puts reconciliation further away, and from a strategic perspective it makes NATO obliged to participate in Israel's various wars on their behalf. Would we really want to have been dragged into the idiotic invasion of Lebanon last year?

I don't mind expanding NATO through Eastern Europe, but beyond that, it becomes a new entity all together.  There is already a fledgling "Western Alliance" (can't remember its name at the moment) which could be used to bring these other democratic-leaning nations into their fold to promote democracy across the globe, but expanding NATO probably isn't the best idea.
