In 1948, Truman made this offer to Eisenhower, who declined.  How different do you think the election would have turned out?  Also, in this scenario, Strom Thurmond doesn't run a third pary, because Eisenhower wasn't nearly as pro Civil Rights.

Eisenhower/Truman: 481
Dewey/Warren: 50

Remember in 1948, Truman was quite an unpopular President and many people believed that Truman would lose to then Governor of New York, Thomas E. Dewey.

However without Henry A. Wallace and Strom Thurmond running for President, the election would have been much closer between Harry Truman and Thomas E. Dewey.

The only real major difference in the 1948 Presidential Election, had Thurmond or Wallace hadn't of ran, would be that Truman would have carried the entire South.
