I hope the Senate will quickly defeat this useless joke measure.

Agreed.  We just dealt with this a week ago when we dropped the drinking age to 18 (16 under parental permission)?  Why couldn't this whole thing have just been an amendment to that bill?

I'll support this bill if it is made consistent with the new drinking age.  Motion to replace the text as follows:

"Persons under the age of 16 and over the age of 5 shall be allowed to consume alcohol under the supervision of a parent or guardian."

Something to do with this being written months ago I think. I assumed when I wrote this that the badly written bill (and the final piece of legislation isn't much better) that hath recently become law would not do so.

Yes; I would have no problem with changing 18 to 16.

Why, specifically, five?

Because this bill is loosely based on the age limits in the U.K where it is five. Well, that's part of it; the other is that there has to be a lower limit somewhere and five seems like a reasonable number.
Mind you; what age do children start going to school in the States Atlasia?

Variously between ages 2 and 5. Some states mandate pre-K, all states mandate Kindergarten, so at the latest age 5 (and that would be starting Kindergarten later than the average student).

In New Jersey, public schools are required to offer pre-K to 3-year-olds, though attendance is not mandatory, and locally some public schools offer pre-K to 2-year-olds. I started school at age 2, but I began at a Presbyterian school. The law requiring public school systems to offer pre-K was passed when I was in middle school, IIRC. (My parents were heavily involved in lobbying for it.)

Ah. In Germany, it's technically legal to feed your newborn infant alcohol (well. Might come under general neglect etc laws, but there's nothing in the laws specifically mentioning alcohol) as long as it's not in public. Roll Eyes

Huh? Where?

North Dakota doesn't. Or at least DIDN'T when I went to Kindergarten, that's very likely been changed since then considering it was 18 years ago.

I'm pretty sure it's the case in most of New England, at least. Nowhere mandates two-year-olds, obviously.

I'm opposed to the bill, but the amendment is a common sense fix.

Aye.

Any more amendments?  Otherwise, a final vote will come shortly.

Considering 24 hours has passed without debate on the legislation, I would like to bring a motion to bring this legislation to final vote.

We are now voting on the following legislation:

Reform of the Alcohol Reform Act Bill

"Persons under the age of 16 and over the age of 5 shall be allowed to consume alcohol under the supervision of a parent or guardian".
