I'm not asking if you think such things should be banned or whatever, blah blah blah, just if there is any such things you've seen that seriously disturbed you and you were possibly worried children could access it.

Answer: No. I found the smoking in Sin City far more offensive than the violence.

The fact that anyone actually enjoyed the Saw movies disturbs me.

Worrying about children accessing something, though?  No, not really.

I've always considered people who are for more censorship to just be lazy parents.  Buy a v-chip TV, turn on parental blockers online, and don't buy T or M rated video games.  Its that simple.  There's a reason we have a rating system for TV, movies, and video games.

You know, at first I was going to call you out on how dumb that is, but it probably won't change anything.

That has absolutely nothing to do with the question.

Yeah. It appears the reaction to American moral decay is causing more moral decay than if it was less untreated. Truly, the medicine is worse than the disease. Tongue

...and when I was small, I was quite appalled....but as I got a little older, I become coll with it. All thanks to Mortal Kombat. ...and since then I have not tried to set anyone on fire by ripping of my own face or have tried to disembow anyone. Tongue

What?  I thought that the whole question was about children's access to "disturbing" images in the media.  I responded by commenting on the related topic of ratings systems and parental blockers which when used properly should create an environment in which children are safely protected from media content meant for mature audiences.  I'd say my comments have everything to do with the question which is why I made them.

I haven't seen them, but I've heard - and I generally agree with you on this.

I agree; with one addition.

Actually I'm quite curious towards the "torture porn" thread. I would be disturbed in that so many people seem find watching people being tortured as entertaining. So clearly there is something wrong here. I don't believe it's "natural" (whatever that is) human reaction.

I'm sure I have at least once, though it's no reason for censorship or anything like that.

The question is if you're personally offended, not about censorship. I'm saying I've never once been offended by any type of violence in the media that prudes like Joe Lieberman whine about.

Okay BRTD I'll answer your question: Yes, I have been worried about violent media, etc (Though it's rarely violence - and sex which is the problem. Rather how they are portrayed is the issue.) and I suppose it reflects some not too ideal things about the current standard of society - (Look at the classic film noir's from the 50s - they are drenched with the moral hypocrisy, wag-the-doggery and Militant villigante conformism which represented the worst of that decade. And is often obvious.) But having a system of censorship is just open to abuse and agenda and has no place in a civilized society. The market is the problem, not the law. (or for that matter, the hack film makers, etc.)

Let it be known that I do enjoy knowing that my collection of violent movies pisses off people like you and Ralph Nader.

I don't give a fig. What you watch doesn't concern me - what does is the attitudes that create it. Big difference.

Kids are lot more resourceful than you're giving  them credit for. Still, I oppose outright censorship on priniciple. As to the question at hand, I think appalled is a little too strong for my reaction to tv, though much of it is quite distasteful.

Well, putting aside the smoking and the violence and the bad language and whatnot, I find the fact that Sin City is a plotless, overhyped piece of trash which was hailed as "original" by a bunch of tools who have clearly never seen Casshern to be what was truly offensive about this movie. Not that I'm unhinged or have a disproportionately strong way of expressing my opinion or anything.

On the more general question, I have never been offended by a movie on grounds of violence. I don't particularly like gory movies if the gore is there solely for kicks and doesn't carry some kind of underlying moral message, but then again I don't have to watch it.

Cartoons need to be more violent too.  Nobody dies anymore in cartoons.  Why?

I will say I find the fact that the Saw movies are popular disturbing too though... not because they are so violent, just because they totally suck.

I can see Ralph Nader right now, in his giant, dark, fortress of evil, pounding his fist on his oversized desk in outrage over your collection of movies he's never heard of.
