Just a thought.  Because of the impending Hollywood writers' strike, which could potentially start as early as today, there's a good chance that all the late night shows (like Colbert) will be going off the air for the next couple of months, or however long the strike lasts:

So maybe Colbert's presidential campaign is a stunt designed to keep his name in the news while he's off the air...to make sure that his audience eagerly awaits his return?  Maybe that's how he's going to get around campaign finance laws that could be read to render his show an illegal corporate contribution?  His show will be off the air for a while, so it'll be a moot point.
