So I was doing a big tourist trip this past week, to see the historical sites in Philly, Ellis Island and the Statue of Liberty in NYC, and a couple of the Smithsonian museums in D.C., and going up to NYC we stop to get gas in New Jersey.

The first thing that struck me as strange is full-service at the gas station with an attendant.

The second thing was that the gas was $2.56 per gallon, as opposed to North Carolina for example where we pump our own gas and it's $2.76 per gallon.

How does New Jersey pay the attendants' salary and workmen's comp and all that, and yet your gas is twenty cents a gallon cheaper?

New Jersey has one of the lowest gas tax rates in the country.

It's the law in New Jersey that you can't pump your own gas.  So all stations are full-service.

Good economic policy is so rare in america..

New Jersey and Oregon are the only two states with such a policy.

As for New Jersey's price in particular...I imagine it's mainly due to lower gas taxes.  While New Jersey has plenty of refineries, you see a big jump in prices once you immediately cross the river into PA.  (Another state with a significant number of refineries (Sunoco etc), but a higher tax).

NY's tax is attrocious.  Gas prices in upstate NY are at least 10 cents more than metro philly (PA side) prices.

Not to mention NYC or Long Island...  The price jumps about 50 cents from North Jersey.

Would you deport anyone who pumped their own gas in New Jersey?  You know, since they broke the law?

Mostly, though the fact that full-service stations are competing with self-service stations across the borders has also lowered prices. (In a vacuum, full-service stations would probably cost around $0.10 more than those in New Jersey, everything else being equal.)

I heard full service results in lower insurance rates which might have something to do with it (although I don't see how letting people pump their own gas is that much of hazard it'd jack up insurance costs).

If I recall correctly, Sen. Gerry Cardinale is a perpetual supporter of ending self-serve gas, but it never goes anywhere because it has little support in the Senate, Assembly, or among the general populace.

Yes, Cardinale holds little rallies in Tenafly in favor of self-serve gas from time to time, actually. It's quite amusing.

While we're b*tching about New Jersey, what the heck's up with I-95 there? It doesn't make any sense at all.

People in Somerset County protested the Somerset Freeway until it got cancelled, so I-95 is discontiguous. They're planning to reroute I-95 via the Pennsylvania Turnpike Extension to connect.

But you accused me of trolling when I suggested you would deport someone for breaking the law.  Here you've just admitted that you support deporting law-breakers.

Yes - the law of entering the country illegally.  That's the only law I'd deport them for breaking.
