Actually, this might make sense for the PRC to do (at some level). The Russians gave the world a demonstration on how not to mess with them in 2008 and got away with it without even real PR-damage in the parts of the world they care about. The Chinese, too, could assert themselves as the #1 regional power (regional in this case being relative with nearly half of the world's population living in S&E Asia) , and could at the same time demonstrate its muscle to the World at large. All without really having to fear for any repercussions, because, hey, we didn't put the Russians in the corner either, did we now?

EDIT: Not that I actually believe this is going to happen any time soon. It's just less a part of fairyland than, say, an Israeli-Turkish war.

The Global Times is a hyper-belligerent rag with the substance of Fox News. That old Kremlinology trick of using party publications doesn't work in China.

But I read the Chinese article, and the argument the columnist made was better to attack now than never - Vietnam/Philippines will drag the US and others into what the Chinese think is a regional conflict. "The actions of great powers may cause a temporary global stir, but in the long run they will stabilize the region and focus a nation's strategy. That can only maintain world peace."

For an example of the Global Times's journalistic style please read this gem: http://beijing.globaltimes.cn/two-cents/opinion/2011-03/630731.html.

There might be more inclination among some elements of the PLA to use force in the South China Sea debate, but that doesn't mean war is imminent or even likely.

Oh, and also:

Hello: China is not a bellicose country. Only a repressive one.

They are gaining the world in their pocket without using the slightest bullet outside of their borders. They only have to use some anti-riots tools within their borders in order to be sure their citizens don't protest against some slavish working conditions or against housing speculation.

Not bellicose but repressive?

lol, Chinese imperialism would be the exact opposite of US one...

And apparently USA wouldn't be fans that someone would eventually try to copy their model of imperialism, a few weeks ago, when China achieved its 1st aircraft carrier, USA did this surrealist thing to tell them: 'We want a justification for the building of this', says the country which has (how many?) some aircraft carriers all around the world...

And then USA still wonder why a lot of people around the world has a problem with them, with their behavior...

But in the US universe this might be very logical.

Ah, and, in case, China would eventually try the US model of imperialism with Vietnam (which is the country with which it seemed the hottest a few months back), would be great to see the small Vietnam defeating a 3rd big imperialist power after France and USA.
