The events of July 20, 1944:

12:40 PM: Hitler is killed by a bomb outside Rastenburg, Poland.
3:00 PM: Hitler is confirmed to Claus von Stauffenberg, the man who detonted the bomb, as being dead.
3:30 PM: Heinrich Himmler, head of the Gestapo and SS, and Hermann Göring, head of the Luftwaffe, meet. They decide to form a new Nazi government. Joseph Goebbels, Propaganda Minister, is made Reichspräsident, thus "kicking him upstairs", while head of the OKW Wilhelm Keitel is made Reichskanzler. Keitel is a military man who both Göring and Himmler believe they can manipulate.
3:40 PM: Ludwig Beck, an important plotter, declares on national radio that Hitler is dead, he is the new Reichspräsident, and Carl Goerdeler is the new Reichskanzler.
3:45 PM: Himmler sends a message to all SS and Gestapo detachments inside Germany, telling them that he is in control, and commanding the officers to maintain order by force.
4:05 PM: The plotters take control of Paris, and with it all of occupied France.
4:45 PM:An hour after the message from Himmler, the SS and Gestapo clash with the Reserve Army, which supports the plot, in the streets of Berlin.
7:30 PM: Peace has been restored through most of Germany. The Nazis clearly have the upper hand.

Ah yes, Paris, where irl the local coupist-in-charge Stülpnagel decided to push on with the coup even though Hitler had survived. Frankfurt City boy that, Stülpnagel.

Not initially. Although the matter became clear (Hitler spoke on the radio to prove he was still alive) hours before Stülpnagel gave up.

Raised here and went to school here, to the Lessing-Gymnasium. (The French Wikipedia article mentions Frankfurt, oddly enough.)

Indeed not. Which is why his old school's insistence on honoring him has occasionally been controversial. Which is why I'm aware of him at all. Wink
