So... how bad does the GOP get destroyed in the next election with "The Huckster" at the top of the ticket?

I would not underestimate Huckabee. The strength of each Democrat in the general election is truly a question mark, so this may be a race no matter how "weak" the Republican candidate may be in certain areas such as foreign policy experience.

That said, McCain is clearly the most electable Republican, followed closely by Romney.

Fraudster Hucksterbee goes down to a devastating defeat, taking Republican Senators, Congressmen, and Governors down with him.

Another Goldwater debacle.

Huckleberry is a lightweight reyling on the votes of evangelical bigots, a strategy
which will not carry him past Iowa.

He'll need a lot more hucksterbucks than what he has now to compete long term.

voted WV and VA, although WV wouldn't really be "up-for-grabs," as Huck would lose it handily.  VA would be a tossup / slight lean Democratic.

Social conservativsm != love of the religious right. Hardcore religious right candidates like Huckabee never do well in WV. Talk to Al about this.

I voted WV, VA (though I agree with Tweed's statements regarding both) and AZ. I stupidly didn't vote for KY as polls show even Hillary is competitive there.

Right. I forgot about the flat/fair tax. He'll lose badly there.

I agree.  There are enough tongues-speaking, snake-handling Pentecostals and fire-breathing, hellfire Baptists in West Virginia to give Huckabee the state.  Possibly handily.  There's a reason Gore and Kerry both lost West Virginia -- and it's not because Billy Bob like George W. Bush's "populism".

Northern West Virginia is packed with young, centerist professionals, especially around the Morgantown/Clarksburg/Wheeling area.

Plus, I don't think there is any room to grow with the Fundamentalists... I think we pretty much had maximum turnout in 2004.

Carlonia.... run by governor Carl I.

Anyway, I agree that W.Viriginia is too socially conservative to vote DEM anymore, unless Guiliani is nominated.

MY question, however, would be...which states will swing when Hick is nominated?

First, the Republicans aren't crazy enough to nominate Huckabee.

Second, if the Republicans did nominate Huckabee, did he would do worse than McGovern in 1972!

Third, if Huckabee were nominated, Paul would easily crack five per cent of the vote nationwide as the Libertarian party candidate!

Do you think those are the swing voters? Those are the rare voters that vote Republican on the local level, and the state is far from Republican there. What soulty said is pretty much correct here.

As explained before, WV may be socially conservative, but it is hardly in love with the religious right.

There's a reason Gore and Kerry both lost West Virginia -- and it's not because Billy Bob like George W. Bush's "populism".

In the case of Gore it had to do with him getting written off as an anti-gun and anti-coal extremist, and in the case of Kerry campaigning on all the wrong issues and completely neglecting and abusing the local party machinery, Al can say a lot on this. The bottom line though is it's pretty dumb to expect every election to be like 2000-2004 until the end of time.

I understand what you are saying, but HOW could it be different? 2000 and 2004 were different, yet had the same conclusion. Could you give me some substantiation and hypos?

If Huckabee were to be nominated, I except Bloomberg will throw his hat in the race, split the moderate Republicans and religious Republicans, add in a few Democrats, and we'd see a Democratic landslide.

I love how now so many believe WV has become such a GOP stronghold that it's even safer than states where Bush even got a higher percentage.
