I calculated these numbers using a slightly modifed version of what I have used before. I gave one point for which party's Presidential candidate won the state in 2004, one point for what party the governor is, and one point each to the party of the Senators. I gave one point for the state's overall house delegation (If a state has 4 Representatives and 2 are Democrats and 2 are Republicans, then each party got 0.5 points). I used a similar method for the state legislatures. One point for the lower house and one point for the upper house. (If a house was 60 D - 40 R, then the Democrats received 0.6 points and the Republicans received 0.4 points). This added up to 7 total points in 49 states and 5 in Nebraska. I put Sanders and Lieberman as Democrats. I put Jore as a Republican and the VT Progressives as Democrats, and ignored the other indies/third parties in the state legislatures because I was too lazy to look them up (and if they were indies too lazy to find out which party if any they caucused with). A minor detail, hopefully, though if people complain I might "fix" it. I didn't do any data for DC but figured it was >90% because of its non-voting Rep. being a Dem and because it voted for Kerry.
This data is meant to show each party's strength in and control over the fifty states. Interestingly enough, there are 25 Democratic states and 25 Republican states.
