Let's suppose that John McCain wins the Republican nomination in a hard fought contest with Mitt Romney, and that McCain goes on to be elected President.

Would President McCain ask former Governor Romney to be in his cabinet?

This is a serious question, and is not for Romney bashing.

Thank you.

I don't think so.  Romney doesn't seem like the type that would accept this kind of offer either.  I thinks its far more likely that Huckabee would be the other half of a McCain ticket.

Doubtful. He could certainly pad his pocketbook better working in the private sector.

The only way I could see it unfolding is as follows.

McCain selects a Veep he really isn't excited about personally, maybe Huckabee?  He secretly intends to serve only one term.  He offers Romney a cabinet post as Secretary of the Treasury or Secretary of Commerce.  Maybe OMB.  And he promises that he won't campaign openly for his VP in 2012.

But I think McCain fully intends to serve two terms.  And, as others have said, I don't think Romney would be interested.

No, I don't think either of them would want it. And I don't really see Romney as representing any vital part of the GOP coalition so that it is imperative for McCain to include him. Huckabee would be a better alternative for that.

everyone hates Romney and nobody will give him a job unless they need to as a deal at the Convention.

In that case, perhaps the nominee will have to pick Romney for VP.

Only if it was a position heading up a department McCain that intended to get rid of.

I don't think McCain trusts the man all that much.

McCain wouldn't offer and Romney wouldn't ask. Romney best suits the Private Sector where he'll continue to add money to his fourtune. If not he can always accept the position of President of Harvard Tongue.

I'd like to think that there are a few cabinet positions for Romney, but I doubt he would take it. If he doesn't get the nod, he'll go back to the private sector.

Romney should move to Nevada and take on Harry Reid in 2010.

Screw that, he should move to Utah, and hope for a McCain victory. McCain appoints Hatch as his AG, and Mitt gets goes after that Senate seat.

Millions of voters, as confirmed in the caucuses and primaries, like Romney, like him enough to vote for him.

Maybe the Romney haters on this forum hate Romney, but not everyone hates Romney.

Obviously, millions of Americans are quite taken with him and his abilities to lead the nation.

Romney would make an excellent Secretary of the Treasury.

Romney would make an excellent Secretary of the Treasury.

So what exactly does a Secretary of the Treasury do and why would Romney be good it that, specifically.

Gets his name on currency -> creeps out people to have Romney in their pockets -> spending increases greatly -> economy takes off!

I mean, c'mon - McCain put Romney in cabinet?  Is a coffin like a cabinet?  The McCain animus toward Romney may even preclude a prominent speaking role at the convention much less anything beyond.

He'd be a viable candidate for Commerce I reckon, but what about Giuliani for Secretary of the Treasury?

Romney would prefer RNC chairman or a national or international function from which he can become an inner Gore (I mean, not a premature retiree, but a moral authority).

Or Fed's chairman, after Bernanke resigns amid economic and stock exchange sinkings !
