Florida Governor Charlie Crist endorsed McCain the night of the Democratic South Carolina primary.

When McCain spoke after Crist gave him his endorsement, McCain said the following about Crist

"Charlie Crist is known throughout the nation and througout the world as one of the great leaders of the twenty first century."

What?

One of the great leaders of the twenty first century?

Are you kidding me?

Crist was elected Governor in 2006.  Outside Florida, most Americans have never even heard of him, let alone internationally.

What is McCain talking about?

Has McCain lost his mind?

The Economist thought Crist was a near-messianic figure just 100 days after he was inaugurated; If it weren't for his marital situation, he'd probably be the odds-on GOP favorite in 2012.  Economist article: http://tinyurl.com/32za99

I don't get this.  When you get endorsed by someone, you compliment them greatly (even if it's a bit ridiculous).  What was McCain supposed to say, "A great guy, who happens to be a little light in the loafers!"

This is a legitimate question.

I said nothing about Romney.

Trust you to turn it around into some sort of Romney bashing.

Seeing as how he has supported the war this entire time, another question comes to mind: Did he ever have a mind to lose?

Yes, but it's better than some of McCain's other unfortunate verbal gaffes.

I think McCain has a tendency to get caught up in a moment and then say something bizarre.  He isn't the most eloquent of speakers but he still makes Bush look like a dyslexic chimp.  Romney is the best orator of the Republicans.

I don't know, this does sound pretty out there. It's not going to hurt him itself, but if McCain says too many ridiculous things, someone (whether Romney in the primary or Clinton in the general, neither of whom is above it) will accuse him of being on the verge of senility.

I tend to agree with Sam.  McCain went overboard, but it's just par for the political course.  Perhaps McCain needs a better speechwriter/coach.  He should have referred to Crist as "one of the most promising..." etc, etc.

By the way, I have completely ignored Crist but what I heard from and about him last night impressed me.

Winfield,

If Romney got the endorsement from Governor Crist and said what McCain said, he wouldn't, but let's assume he would, I wouldn't be surprised if you'd be praising the guy.

This outlandish statement would be just as ridiculous if Romney had said it, and I would take issue with Romney for saying it as well.

I'm sure you would've immediately gotten onto the Atlas and started a thread entitled "Has Romney lost his mind?"

Well, how many great leaders of the 21st century can you think of? It's all about how you define "great," isn't it?

No. McCain hasn't lost his mind ... yet ... but at 71, he's getting on a bit. Perhaps, however, inappropriate his praise of Crist, he just got all a bit overwhelmed in the moment and just said the first thing that come into his head. It happens

Crist and Martinez likely provided McCain the size of his victory in Florida (he would have won anyway, but not by 5%)

I'm just really, really, really trying to bash him. I have no reason to like him with his warmongering and his comments about the Democrats being the "surrender party" and all that crap, and his latest pandering to the religious right.

If anything, McCain should be approaching the end of his presidency, not, potentially, beginning it. He's approaching 72, and with the past 21 years in the Senate, he's yesterday's man

No good, as far as I'm concerned, the GOP redeeming themselves now for nominating George W Bush, in 2000. I'd bet money that American prestige would not have gone into freefall had McCain been the president this past seven, coming up eight years

For McCain to win the nomination and the presidency in 2008 doesn't look good given that context when the GOP could have got it right in 2000

I have a lot of respect for John McCain but he's eight years too late
