I was lokking at some of the Governor elections and there seemed to be no runningmate mates for some.  What's the reason for that?

There are about six states that don't have Lt.Govs.  If the Governor leaves office, some other official like the Secretary of State or the President of the Senate takes over.

In other states, voting for Governor and Lt. Governor is totally seperate, so they could be from different parties.  Howard Dean originally became Governor of Vermont because he was Lt. Governor when the Republican Governor died.

In New Jersey, upon the resignation, death or removal of the Governor, the President of the Senate takes office as Acting Governor.

In 2001, Christie Whitman resigned and Don DiFrancesco, president of the senate became Acting Governor. He diecide not to run for re-election to his senate seat. His term as Senator on Jan. 15 and Gov. McGreevey didn't take office until January 19.

To make things more complicated, our Senate was split 50-50, so we had two Senate Presidents, on e republicn, and one dem, so each were acting governor for two and a half days, unitl McGreevey took the oath.

New Hampshire has no Lieutenant Governor. I believe the State Attorney General would fill the vacancy.

In Mississippi they run separately.  In 1995 we ended up reelecting Kirk Fordice (R) to governor, but Ronnie Musgrove (D) to Lt. Gov

In PA they run separatley during the primary but are together as a ticket in the general election. I don't like this system. I wish a Gubernatorial candidate could select a Lt. Governor right from the beginning. I don't think a candidate for Governor and a candidate for Lt. Governor should be made to run on the same ticket since they might not have the same beliefs or ideas for the state.

States with no Lt. Gov: AZ, ME, NH, NJ, OR, WV, WY

President of State Senate succeeds Governor in ME, NH, NJ, WV
Secretary of State succeeds Governor in AZ, OR, WY

Additionally the LG in Tennessee is elected from among the State Senate, and it effectively both LG and Senate President...he is not popularly elected.

Every other state has a popularly elected position entitled "Lieutenant Governor".

Hola!

Sometimes they run together like the President/VP, and sometimes they run seperately.

In some states, the office of Lt. Governor is a very powerful position, as much and sometimes more than the governorship itself.

Tennessee has had the same Lt. Governor for many years, serving under both Republican and Democratic administrations. In texas, the job of Lt. Governor is a more powerful position, and the governor position is a little bit more than a ceremonial position of sorts.
