In his final act of corruption, Governor McGreevey is waiting to resign until the day that the deadline for a special election expires.

He ought to resign now to give the people the opportunity to pass judgment on him and the democratic machine in Trenton.  Unfortunately, he won't do that.  He won't want to compromise John Kerry's chances of winning the state by having a special election on the same day as the Presidential election.

A "responsible transition", the reason McGreevey gave for waiting, only takes a few weeks. The Clinton-Bush transition was only a little over a month.

Yeah. In reality it's an irresponsible way to keep the Democrats in power.

He didn't do anything wrong, so there's no reason why he should ever resign.

It sounds to me like he was forced out of office just because he's gay.

I will be an open seat in 2005 anyway....Republicans will have their chance then.
Do you really need to have an election for the one year left in his term?

Wrong Bandit. He was not forced out because he was gay. He had an affair with someone and then appointed them to a state job which he was not eligible to serve. And now the person he had an affair with is sueing for sexual harassment. On top of all this, the McGreevey administration has been plauged with a number of scandals.

If he feels he must resign, then he's perfectly justified in waiting until it's too late to hold a special election. The Republicans had their chance to put up a winnable candidate in the last election, and they failed to do so.

I don't care if it's one year or one month. There should be a special election. I think you're going to see the citizens of NJ voicing support for a special election, too. And they are the one's that matter most on this issue.

I think he was.

That doesn't mean he actually did what he's accused of doing. Anyone can sue, but it doesn't mean they'll win.

Bandit, no one knew he was gay. There were rumors but people here were shocked. I couldn't believe it. People being interviewed on the news couldn't believe it. So to say people put pressure on him to resign because he was gay is ridiculous.

Shamefully, I engaged in adult consensual affairs with another man. - That is an exact quote from Governor McGreevey this afternoon. Have a little bit of knowledge of the situation before you spew your BS.

I like Senator Codey and I believe he will bring experiance and much-needed integrity to the Governor's office. However, he will be serving for 14-months, that is a long time to serve in the most powerfull Governorship in the country without the people electing you.

I have heard that the New Jersey Republican State Committee is planning on filing a lawsuit against the Governor to get him to resign immediatley, but I doubt that will be successfull.

No.

What he actually should do is just end it after his term is over.

I think he should resign. New Jersey-ites might elect a Republican - but I expect the state to go for Kerry.

The Democrats will suffer if they don't allow the electorate a choice.

No. I personally don't think that he needs to step down at all. A person's sexual orientation does not affect how great of Governor they are.

And people still don't get it. He gave a state homeland security job to the guy when the guy was ineligible for the job. This doesn't have to do with him being gay, it has to do with what he did as Governor.

McGreevey resigned because there were reports that Golan Cipel would file a sexual harassment suit against him in Mercer County Court.

Ok so tell me where it says that he resigned because he was gay.

(just to fill you in, the harassment suit is one thing that would lead to another. McGreevey knew that. He knew that the homeland security job he gave to Cipel would come out and that would only hurt him more.)

Just in from CNN: Cipel will NOT file a lawsuit against McGreevey.
