It would be interesting for the Republican and Democratic parties return to their respective 19th century positions, updated for 125 years of history.

I wouldn't describe the 19th Century Republicans of either the Civil War/Reconstruction-era or the Gilded Age as laissez faire.  They differed somewhat on which government subsidies needed doing most, but not on the general principle of government action to stimulate the economy.

The principle difference for the Republicans of the two eras is that by the Gilded Age they lost their zeal for social reform.
