Probably recovering old ground here, but I havea  flag suggestion. Rather than a post colonial flag, something a bit warm and unique.

Well...unique in terms of re-using the flag of the old Spanish Second Republic, red over gold over purple.

Obviously it would be charged with our coat of arms too.

Thoughts?

I'm good with the idea. Maybe add a distinctive Antillian symbol on it?

I like that idea, Ernest.  In case there are still any pro-dictator types out there, they could have the old flag to rally 'round.

I don't consider it to be a 'pro-dictator' flag Tongue As for the coat of arms, the one i've proposed is pretty much what Ernest described, except with a symbol representing Portugal.

What about this?

Again I'm going for 'unused' colour combinations here. It's a little softer.

Interesting. I would like it if it wasn't so Dutch.

It isn't Dutch. Their flag is Red over white over blue without any coats of arms. You couldn't get any less Dutch Smiley

How about just the flag of the Spanish Republic? (no add ons or anything)

It's what I was aiming for; however I didn't want to just lift the coat of arms they had (as nice as they were). Protocol dictates the arms are only used if it's a government flag IIRC.

You think with our British or French Backgrounds we'd reflect it at least in color on the flag?

No; it's reflected in the coat of arms. As with any nation with a diverse ethnic makeup, you tend to make the flag itself as neutral as possible, while demonstrating history through arms (like Canada)

We need to come up with some colors before we design a flag.

Colors should have some symbolism, and work well together on a flag.

This is probably the most 'unique' least bold, but distinctive flag I could think of. Yes and it's a bit like a reversed flag of the Yukon.

Blue is for the sky and the sea, white for peace and green for the land. It's a little European and a little 'Candian Provincial' in design.

As for colours, I would back the use of blue, white and either green or a warm yellow.

For the Antillian symbol on the coat of arms, perhaps the shield should be flanked on the left by a pickaxe (mining) and on the right by a grain (farming).

Why not just opt for a hammer and sickle Cheesy

Seriously though, I would oppose that as it's the preserve of socialist one party states and African agrarian republics.

Yeah, I realized that right after posting. Tongue

What should be the Antillian symbol? And what do the castle and blue things represent?

The 'blue' things are Portuguese. It adds a balance to the arms colour wise and I thought representation should be included no matter how fleeting the Portugese presence was or is. The castle is a hereldic device; it is lifted from the arms of the Spanish Republic where it simulates the role of a crown, but without the royal political baggage. The castle/fort device would also symbolise Antilla - if we were colonised then the first, biggest and most sturdy constructions would have been forts (there would still be some dotted about)

As for symbols, well that would be a flower or animal - it depends on what our wildlife would be. I like the idea of a ram Smiley It's quite mundane and domestic but it would be widespread.

Ram would work. I still think there should be something on each side of the shield.

On that note.

Arms on a flag however look cleaner without supporters etc. National arms would be quite different and can make use of 'plumage' Smiley

Are there any objections to this proposal?
