Anyone here remember 2000 when Dubya chose Dick Cheney as his running mate?

My question is this:  did this come as a complete surprise to the political intelligentsia or was Cheney already perceived as one of the top contenders for the VP slot?

Thanks

I'm pretty sure this was the kind of thing that was not expected. Some ex-Wyoming congressman who was then serving as CEO of Halliburton? Not the first thing that woudl come to my mind.

He was Secretary of Defense under President Bush 1989-1993.

What can you say? He was put in charge of finding a running mate... and he picked himself.

He should have selected John Danforth as many expected him to. Not Darth Cheney.

He was SecDef in the first Bush administration, and, very shortly after the '92 election, there was some buzz that he might run for president in '96, so the idea that he might have national ambitions was out there.  Really, the only reason why it was a surprise was because Cheney was leading the VP search team himself.

I'm sure he appreciates the bad advice of an Australian child eight years after the fact.

The comments should have some political substance, not just empty insults.

Electorally, Cheney brought nothing to the ticket.  WY was going Republican anyhow.  I thought ,on that basis, Cheney was a bad choice.

They would have been good choices.  I'm not sure whether Ridge would have helped Bush carry Pennsylvania but he would certainly have bought something to the ticket that Bush lacked.  Dole would have been groundbreaking being a woman, as well as in keeping with official Republican policy since 1976 that a Bush or a Dole must be on every ticket nominated.

I wonder if Elizabeth Dole would have been ambitious enough to consider running for President in 2008, despite being 72 years-old?  It hasn't stopped McCain.  And would Ridge have opted not to run for re-election with Bush in 2004?  After all, he retired from the administration in real life at the beginning of the second term.  John Danforth would certainly have been a good choice; experienced, more moderate and from a critical bellweather state.  What is interesting to hypothesise is whether he would have publicly broken with the administration and the GOP as he has more or less now?  Probably like Colin Powell, he would have retired after one term in 2004 and just distanced himself from Bush.  So if Bush did select Danforth or Ridge and they retired after one term, who would he have chosen in 2004?  I sense Bill Frist would have been high up on the list.

Danforth would have been an awesome choice.  He is a truly great man.

I remember when the search was going on, Danforth was the best candidate out there, and Ridge wasn't that far behind. Can you imagine how different this election would be if someone else was chosen?

Other possibilities for GOP VP in 2000 besides Cheney, Danforth, Ridge, Dole

Representative John Kasich of Ohio
Governor Frank Keating of Oklahoma
Senator Fred Thompson of Tennessee
Senator Chuck Hagel of Nebraska

Remember, this was well before Thompson made his disastrous run for President in 2008.

Senator John McCain of Arizona and General Colin Powell of New York, who were also mentioned as possibilities, disavowed any interest in the VP nomination.

I could see Kasich helping in Ohio and Thompson in Tennessee.  I can't really see why anyone would want Keating and Bush - two Governors from next-door states.  Hagel was only four years into his term and came from one of the most solidly Republican states in the country.

A very mild surprise. It was not as if there were some standout alternative. And the man from gravitas made sense for the inarticulate provincial governor.
