What if, instead of January 1998, news of Bill Clinton's affair with Monica Lewinsky had broken in January 1996?  And what if, some time later in '96 (say, over the summer), after having denied it for months, Clinton was forced to confess that the affair did in fact take place (as IRL over the summer of '98)?  Would Clinton have been forced to step aside as the party's nominee, in favor of Gore or someone else?  Or would he have toughed it out and run anyway, and how would the 1996 election go?
