Reading some of these names that Democrats have listed makes me laugh.  William Cohen, Olympia Snowe, Tom Ridge?  What do all three of these people have in common?  They are all liberal Republicans.  I'm not surprised Democrats would advocate more liberal choices, but I think it's fanciful to believe these people have a good shot at being chosen.

To call Tom Ridge a liberal Republican is pretty laughable. He may be more moderate but he's in no way a liberal.

Agreed, and he would be big plus for McCain in delegate rich PA.

Uh, I don't think McCain needs to worry about delegates.  Wink

Maybe you meant voter rich PA. I still don't see Ridge as being much of a positive here. And to address the earlier point, Ridge is a moderate, not a liberal, but he wouldn't be acceptable to a good chunk of the GOP base.

My personal preferences would be...

1.  Jim Leach
2.  Chuck Hagel
3.  Olympia Snowe

But I predict it will be...  (not nearly as sure of this as with Hillary)

1.  Sanford
2.  Pawlenty
3.  Pence

This McCain supporter wishes he had a clue, but really does not. No one stands out, really, as to my personal preference, as opposed to what is the most politically expedient preference, assuming we are putting that consideration aside, and ignoring electoral realities. Maybe chief justice Roberts if he were willing to take a rather drastic demotion. He's smart of course, and highly articulate, and has charm, and is of  the right age.

That would create all types of problems, not just from ther perspective of having the CJ run for VP.  He's had those seizures, which would create some doubts.

She's also now advising McCain on economic issues.  Who knows, maybe she'll be Secretary of the Treasury if McCain wins.

One would think he'd want someone who didn't nearly drive Hewlett-Packard into the ground. But perhaps not; after all, "The economy is not [his] strong point."

what economic expertise does obama have?

Good point about that, except that the condition is under control as I understand it. And yes, it ain't going to happen, and his vacancy would not be replaced by a clone, but I was not trying to be practical, but focus on the question as to my personal preference.

From an election standpoint, I still have trouble thinking of a better choice than Pawlenty. He is smart, and has charm, no rough edges, has executive experience, has survived a hostile political environment, has some creative ideas or or at least sound bytes (Sam's Club very light), and is from the right part of the country.

I actually agree with Roberts' jurisprudential approach more than the two you mentioned. It is a bit more multi-polar in its compass. I hope that is OK with you. Smiley

No!  It is not!!

Now run away or I shall taunt you and fling livestock over the castle wall!!

(I actually think Roberts is a very intelligent guy and quite likeable.  I just had to take a shot at two of the most HP in my lifetime...)

I've actually met Roberts, since he used to work with my dad, and he is a really smart guy.  He's also pretty enjoyable to listen to in a conversation, despite his conservative jurisprudence.

He doesn't, but the party in power bears the unfair burden of proof on this when the economy's in trouble.

As another poster said, McCain needs a solid conservative.

What about John Kerry? He might be enough to swing Massachusetts for McCain

Well The Swimmer couldn't swing it to Obama, so why should the Wind Surfer be able to swing it to McCain? McCain needs to seek out a land lubber.

In the interests of the continuity he represents, Dick Cheney or GW Bush.  Third choice would be Bush Senior.

Now that is one of the most ingenious posts I have read in a long time.

Way to go Opebo.

1. carly fionna
2. william cohen
3. lamar alexander (but he is probably too old.  mccain needs some youth)

Walter, with all due respect

A dismissed CEO due to poor performance

An aging northeast liberal Republican (this would really inspire confidence with the Republican base)

A southern Republican almost as old as McCain, you have referred to his age  (besides that,  this would be a good choice)

You really do want McCain to lose in November

I have to disagree that McCain needs a solid conservative. Lets face it they will vote for McCain irregardless of who his veep is. To win against either Clinton or Obama he will have to have someone who appeals to swing voters and that would be a mainstream to moderate Republican. Swing voters will look at McCain's age and stay as far away as possible if he selects a conservative. People will want someone who is closer to McCain's philosophy and not another conservative.............too many recent memories of the Bush administration will not impress a single independent. McCain will absolutely need to solidify with moderates in both parties and independents to win.

Giuliani
Sanford (for the conservatives)
Ridge

Crist has too little experience and it could be used against McCain by the Democrats if he tries to do the same with Obama.

1. Mark Sanford
2. Tom Ridge
3. Tim Pawlenty

One of those three people will most likely be selected by McCain shortly before the RNC Convention in Minnesota and in all honesty they're all bad choices (except for maybe Tom Ridge).

In all honesty, I'd like to see John McCain select one of these three people to be his running mate in this year's Presidential Election.

2. Colin Powell
