His campaign has pretty much dismissed Pawlenty as being too liberal. Considering his appeasement of the conservative base as of late, Sanford would be among the most likely choices.
Hutchinson doesn't want to be VP, btw.

I am coming more and more of late to the conclusion that McCain should pick a running mate who will have crossover appeal to independents and Democrats and who would overall not frighten conservatives.

McCain's best opportunity for victory lies in his ability to reach out to independent voters.

Therefore, his best running mate would be a moderate conservative, a male, in his fifties, politically experienced with an impecable reputation, someone with gravitas, whom the voters look upon as someone capable of becoming President should the occasion require.

Now to find a younger version of former Illinois Governor James Thompson.

I have no idea who would fit these criteria.  I will be more than happy to receive suggestions however.

Ya, except Liberman is not a "moderate conservative." He's a moderate liberal.

I actually quite like Lieberman.  He would make a capable VP and would probably even be capable of serving as President if necessary.

Lieberman, though, has ruled himself out of the VP sweepstakes, and I am not so sure how this move would go over with Republicans at large anyway.

But I would rather see Lieberman maybe as Secretary of Defense.

I suggest McCain moves Gates to State and puts Lieberman in Defense, or keeps Gates in Defense and puts Lieberman in State.
