No idea, but I find it amusing that Goldwater cracked 60 here when he won only three other counties in the state. They must really hate freedom there. Grin
Also, says somewhere that it was created out of Hardy County in 1866 as a result of the Civil War - maybe they split Hardy into unionist (Grant) and confederate (Hardy) parts? And that there was a failed attempt soon after to rename it Lee County. Grin

Atlas has county data for WV going back to 1912. Not once during this period did Grant go Democrat and only once did the Republican fail to win it (in 1912). Best a Democrat's ever done there is LBJ in '64 with 37.7%.

Using a French site with teeny county maps going up till 1789, the Republicans failed to win Grant (from what my eyes can pick out). From what I can see, Grant (of all people!) broke 90% there in 1868!

Lewis is correct on its creation- post-1860 for sure as the maps for 1860 and prior don't match the same boundaries. Hope that helps.

Mineral appears to have been formed at the same time, with the same southeastern border.

As far as I can tell, it has never gone Democratic; the last time it did not go for the GOP was in 1912, when it went to Teddy Roosevelt.
