I finished this book about a week ago. At about 1040 pages, it's fairly long, but unlike just about every other book I've read, it doesn't "drag"; rather, it's exciting the whole way through.

Quite possibly the best book I've ever read.

I agree that it is one of the best biographies ever written.  I bought it on a Friday, and had it finished by Sunday night.  It is a wonderful book, and the first 150 pages are an excellent history of the Senate.

Whoops, didn't see that. Wink

Yes, Caro's digreessions, though hundreds of pages long, are quite interesting.

I read Caro's two other books on Johnson, The Path to Power, and Means of Ascent. At first I thought Caro was a brilliant writer, but after a while it just started to get repetitive as Caro kept emphasizing the same things over and over again. But hey- the man does his research. You can never fault him for that.

I really wish Caro would do a biography of Russell, since there only seems to be one about him out there, by Gilbert Fife.

He did a sorta 100-page bio in this book, but you want him to do a full one? I'll be happy if he finishes the LBJ series before he dies. Tongue

I really liked it. But I definitely sense Beet's point.

Yeah, but he only carried it up until 1948.  I'd like him to do a full biography, carrying it up until his death.

Well, I'm almost done with The Power Broker. Excellent book; highly recommended. Got Caro's other two books from the library as well. It's going to be a fun summer.

I got Master of the Senate as a book on CD one time but really never got around to listening to it.

However I really want to read this book sometime.
