Decided that it was time to start this sort of thing again and that it was also time for a new thread for it.

First map, % employed in manufacturing in the former West Midlands "metropolitan county" by old ward:

Highest rates are, of course, in the middle of the Black Country. In this area manufacturing is still largely dominated by the old metal bashing industries and often based in small workshops. Lowest rates are in inner South Birmingham (middle class residential areas for the most part). I can comment more if anyone's interested, but one thing to note; the 2001 census was done before the closure of the Longbridge works. Note that even then, manufacturing employment in Brum was not especially high (ie; most of the workforce had been laid off in the decades before the final closure). One other thing; not all manufacturing employment is blue-collar.

The owned outright and Mortgaged maps are similar.

The owned outright I assume generally older people (and by ward location more Conservative).

Basically. Richer too (although that goes without saying really). The partial exception in East Ham is interesting though not too surprising.

I suppose you could get a mortgage at 25 and pay it off after 25 years and be a 51 year old labour voter with no mortgage.

Don't forget Southall!

This thread was a brilliant idea Grin

True, true. And you get the same pattern in a lot of other heavily Asian working class districts in other cities.

By tomorrow, I hope, there should be five more London ward maps (this time based around NS-Sec data).

A bigger version be here: https://uselectionatlas.org/FORUM/index.php?action=gallery;sa=view;id=558
And an even bigger version (LCC area only) be here: https://uselectionatlas.org/FORUM/index.php?action=gallery;sa=view;id=162

And, seriously, it's worth looking over some of these in detail rather than just looking at the big patterns.

The five catagories were all made from smaller NS-Sec groups. The combinations are not always the most logical, but they are very useful for what I'm building up towards. Much more fun will be had with NS-Sec later.

When I stayed at a bed and breakfast on Cartwright Gardens, it appears that I was in King's Cross precinct in the borough of Camden. It seems like a haven of public housing, and a Labor area, but right on the borderline between the zone of the haves and the have nots.

Camden is a very interesting Borough. It's governed by a Lib Dem-Conservative coalition (with the Lib Dems as the major partners). Labour has been in decline in the area for a while, but King's Cross remains a Labour stronghold. The Greens have a presence, too. Breakdown of the council is as follows:

Lib Dem: 22 (+2 since 2006 election)
Labour: 16 (-2 since 2006 election)
Conservative: 13
Green: 3

No; Irish was an option on the ethnicity question, French wasn't. The number of Irish was greatly underestimated, btw, though probably less so in London than elsewhere.

I should be able to do % born-in-France though (but at borough, not ward, level)

Did you ever get round to the born in the USA map? Where could I find that data anyway?

I happen to know that Kensington and Chelsea has the highest French-born and US-born population, presumably because of their embassies being situated around that area.

Neither is surprising. I suppose the slightly different geography is probably explained by a fair few of the "born in France" being of African descent. Both obviously concentrated in wealthy areas.

Could I ask for a comparsion map between England and Wales by major council area (i.e county, unitary and London borough in England and unitary in Wales) for the following?

People born in Wales, living in England
People born in England, living in Wales.
