Late 1863 through 1864 are continued bad years for the Union Army on the field of battle. While Vicksburg successfully falls to the Union Army on July 4th 1863 the Army of the Potomac has much worse luck. On July 1st 1863 General Robert E. Lee and his Army of Northern Virginia begin a campaign in Gettysburg, PA. The CS Army pushes through the town on the first day and secures Culps Hill, Cemetery Ridge and the Little Round Top. Faced with a tough decision General Meade, determined to win, spends three unsuccessful days trying to break the entrenched line of the Confederate Army. Meade pulls back to Harrisburg in full retreat, Lee fully aware of the advantage uses his time in southern PA to raid farms, refurbish his ragged army, and give Virginia a break from war. While DC remains secure, Maryland becomes even more unstable and the brand new state of West Virginia see constant fighting. However, Sherman is having success in the western theater. Although taking very heavy causalities Sherman is on the verge of taking Atlanta in late October of 1864. Does Lincoln even have a chance to be re-elected in this atmosphere? Here's my map...tell me what you think.

McClellan - 129
Lincoln    -  104
