I'll say it louder: Bill Richardson!

1. Executive experience as governor
2. Federal government experience as a cabinet official
3. HUGE foreign policy and U.N. credentials
4. Obama needs serious help with the Latino vote
5. Kerry states plus Iowa + Colorado + New Mexico = White House.
6. Richardson will bolster Obama's Western strength in general.

He would be a very, very solid choice.

all good points BUT, he's also got a reputation as a womanizer, he's been awfully close to a variety of scandals, his whole resume seems incredibly well put together to make himself a candidate, he reeks of slimy politician, he doesn't really seem to resonate in the latino community, he's an amazingly bland campaigner and poor speaker.

New Mexico, while close, is only 5 EV's and Obama's been favored there, so if he were to lose NM, he could be in trouble anyway.  Arguable how much Richardson's regional appeal will extend beyond NM.

On paper, other than Hillary, he's the best choice.  In real life, I kinda think he'd be a bust.

Of course, we could be over-analyzing.  George H.W. chose a toaster from a state he had no chance of losing.

He was a very pretty toaster, though.

A "Quayle" type pic for Obama might be Martin O'Malley (MD Governor).  For McCain, it would be Sarah Palin.  Smarter than a toaster, sure, but still pretty, youthful, and from a state he should win anyway.

How about Paul Ryan (WI-1) for McCain?  A Hanoi Hilton resident running with someone too young to remember the Fall of Saigon?  Comedy Gold!  A 34-year age difference means technically McCain could be Ryan's grandfather!

Talk about adding youth to the ticket...

Unless he has received some serious coaching since the primaries, he would make a truly abysmal choice.  Resume-wise, I agree completely.  It's loaded.  But if you saw his performance in the debates, heard him on the stump or saw him interviewed during the campaign, he was just plain embarassing.  He made Wes Clark's horrible 2004 effort look credible.  And Richardson kept referring to Russia as "The Soviet Union".

I don't think any of this would necessarily make him a lousy VP.  But before he enters the office, he has to campaign.  And his campaign for President was hideous.

Richardson is some of those things, but a black candidate for President does not pick a Hispanic as a running mate.

It's just politics.

Uh, yeah, but that's why the title of the thread is "Wild Card" not "most likely or likely".  Roll Eyes

Does Sarah Palin count as a McCain wild card?

I for one would spent a whole lot more time watching C-SPAN.

It's a wild card pick, but I could see it happening.  He's very well-respected, younger than McCain and knowledgeable on issues.  He was mentioned as a possible running mate for Kerry in 2004.

Plus, it would mean that Obama would get softball questions in the Brokaw-moderated debate.
