A very, very risky choice.  I'm surprised they did it.  We'll see what happens ...

How is it risky?  You think people will react to her being an insane extreme religious right winger?  They haven't ever reacted to that in previous republican candidates?

Nope, McCain is 72 .........President Palin doesn't make me comfortable.  Forget about it being a pander pick.  I deal with President Obama President Biden or President McCain......there were better options.  And he swore he'd pick someone qualified........she ain't....with all due to the Governor.

It works because it was unexpected. As I said in the other thread, as much as I like Biden, McCain wins the VP announcement game.

If you need to see Palin in on screen, here is a brief clip on guess giving a shoutout at the National Governor's Association meeting.

It also totally and completely sucked the air out of Obama's historic speech last night.  He got 12 hours of coverage, and most of those 12 hours were while people were sleeping.  Didn't even make it to the nightly news broadcasts.

Depends how you view things.  McCain certainly handled the media better, but on the question of who made the better executive decision in picking a qualified vice presidential candidate...?

Right. I was referring, as you said, to the media effect.

She wasn't my ideal pick but I really like her. Sure she's a risk but I think it's going to work out. I worry about experience but she's the only one running this year that has the executive experience.

I'm excited.

By the way, her one daughter beats her mother in the looks department.  Wink

So far she's doing pretty well in her speech.

No Obama in speaking ability, but she's good.  Like McCain actually.

Yeah, I used to say it like that, too. I think a lot of people do. I still don't get why that's such a funny gaffe to some people.

It bothers me

NUCLEAR - NU - CLEAR.
Nucular - who'd have thunk people would want to add another sylable.

Well, she's quite charming and feisty, and of course wholesome as all get out. She didn't demonstrate she knew anything about national issues however in her speech, probably because she doesn't. I hope she is a quick study.

Agreed.  I thought the speech, however, was quite well delivered.  In that, it appears that I disagree with others.

She needs to stop clapping into the microphone, however.

Sarah Palin, a commercial fisherman from Wasilla, told her husband on Tuesday she was driving to Anchorage to shop at Costco. Instead, she headed straight for Ivana.
And there, at J.C. Penney's cosmetic department, was Ivana, the former Mrs. Donald Trump, sitting at a table next to a photograph of herself. She wore a light-colored pantsuit and pink fingernail polish. Her blonde hair was coiffed in a bouffant French twist.

''We want to see Ivana,'' said Palin, who admittedly smells like salmon for a large part of the summer, ''because we are so desperate in Alaska for any semblance of glamour and culture.''
Ivana Trump, the former Czechoslovakian Olympic skier who found fame and wealth as the wife of the New York tycoon, came to Anchorage Tuesday to push her line of perfume.

Oh, Jesus H. Christ, are we really going to get into this "nuclear" garbage again?

I say it "wrong" and I graduated with a friggin' degree in Engineering.  I feel it's a legit regional variation, and those who get so upset about it just come across as prissy English teacher types who insist everything be done their way.

The speech was quite well delivered and was without a teleprompter. Her voice quality is slightly irritating, but in a way that is part of the charm. She has this odd bit of a Wisconsin like accent for some reason. The issue is whether she will have the right stuff, when the knuckle balls get tossed her way by the rapacious press. Her task will be to demonstrate that she has the ability to ramp up with some alacrity. Chatting about reform and how great McCain is, will only get one so far.

You know.

I just don't see how that pronunciation came about, anyway.

But anyway - this is distracting. Let's see if McCain can actually pull this off.
