Greetings,

This is my first post to the Atlas forums. I discovered the site in the spring and have consulted it throughout the summer. With the home stretch kicking off, I just couldn't contain myself and have been yacking and writing all too much about politics.

I am unclear on the policy for posting external links here, as to what constitutes spam and what constitutes links of interest. I recently joined allvoices.com and am taking part in their Excellence in Citizen Media Initiative. You can learn more at their home page, www.allvoices.com.

For now, though, I am going to post a link to my short column on Obama's TV ratings record and how the GOP could try to spin it if Palin draws more viewers than Obama. I think there's a good chance she will, since she's a completely unknown quantity to the Lower 48 and Hawaii.
The rest of my thoughts on the topic can be found at:

http://www.allvoices.com/contributed-news/1223337-vp-candidate

If this is not proper protocol for this board, please advise and I will adjust my comments accordingly. If links are acceptable, I will always try to provide a context for discussion here and never simply post my link without giving serious thought as to whether or not readers of this forum would be interested or not. And yes, I will check back in to see what others think and comment as the spirit moves me.

Thank you and Happy Campaign 08!

Punditty

Welcome! I'm not exactly sure the protocol for posting links to your own writings. I think it'd be fine to post your link to your profile at all Voices in your signature.

If you look at pre-convention polls, about 10% more of America was interested or very interested in watching the Democratic convention than the Republican one.

Obama got over 38 million viewers, which is more than the last episode of American Idol and the opening ceremonies of the Summer Olympics.

So, could a vice-president, however interesting, shatter both the polled interest and Obama's insane enthusiasm gap?

Probably not.

Degemer at an Atlasia.

I have a hard time imagining so. Obama seems to be captivating so many people.

I don’t think she will. For one, she’s not speaking the final night of the convention, and I think that’s the most likely time the average person would tune in. Besides, Obama’s speech was historic, Palin’s covering ground that’s been tread already, and she’s of secondary focus anyway. (Though she does seem to be overshadowing McCain on this forum, at least.)

I expect she'll get higher rating than Biden, not only because she's a woman (thereby making her acceptance speech more historic than most) but because she's such a relative unknown that people will be wanting to tune in to form a first impression.  Doubtful she'll draw higher ratings than Obama nationwide, but she should exceed Obama's ratings in Alaska.

No.

I think I'd keep the sound down a little. She does have a rather shrill voice at times.

Thanks for the welcome.

Lots of interesting scenarios in the 269-269 thread. I will try to do some map predictions later this month before the first debate.

The more Palin gets scandalized, the more people are going to want to watch her speech.  I'd guess that the ratings keep climbing by the day.

It won't be more than Obama got, but it quite possibly could be more than McCain gets.

Women who don't know their proper place often do.

I guess we should find what the ratings were like at some point today. It'd be funny if she gets higher ratings than McCain does tonight.

Yes she got about 1 million less but I think she was on 5  fewer cable networks, she was not on BET or Telumundie  WIth PBS inlcuded Palin had over 40 million viewers, about 1/3 of the folks expeced to vote in Nov.

McCain apparetly got about 1 million more viewers than Obama
