Can anyone pin down the same location, using Street View on Google Maps? I have no familiarity with the area, but I think it'd make for a great "then and now" comparison.

You're right - this would make a great "then and now" comparison.

Perhaps if it's not in Google Maps, someone could go down and snap a photo or something?

It's the Manhattan side of the Brooklyn Bridge.  If you go to google maps, find the bridge and follow it to the shore of Manhattan Island.  To give you an idea of where to look, the New York World Building (the building with the dome in the background) was located at the corner of Park Row and the now closed Frankfort Street, both of which you can find on the map.  The building itself isn't there anymore though.

Unfortunately, the Street View images on the Brooklyn Bridge were taken at night and aren't very high-quality, so there's no great comparison. The barriers on the sides of the bridge are also much higher now. If you have a picture taken from the walkway, which is above where the cars cross the bridge, you could get a much better comparison.

Nineteenth century architecture was probably the best in all of American history. 1830-1890

If you were looking for a "then and now," you aren't going to see much, since the New York World Tower was demolished (along with many others in that stretch) to make room for expanded road ways and entrance ramps for the Brooklyn Bridge (compliments of the automobile).

The is the best image I've found looking in the same direction as the one in the article, but it's from the other side of the bridge.
