Supposing a vice-president dies in office, what happens? Is the speaker of the house immediately elevated to the vice-presidency until the President chooses a new one to be approved by the Senate? Can there be a temporary vacancy in the vice-presidency while a new one is found?

The office remains vacant until filled pursuant to the Twenty-Fifth Amendment.

"Whenever there is a vacancy in the office of the Vice President, the President shall nominate a Vice President who shall take office upon confirmation by a majority vote of both Houses of Congress." U.S. Const., Amend. XXV.
