Layout of the Congressional Elections of 2002 and Other

House Layout

President Nunn kept his popularity quite high. With the passage of a number of bills, some support shifted to the Democrats from the Reform Coalition's corner but in a strange balancing act, a number of Republican pick up's in the south brought some hope to regain the House someday for the Republicans. Also with the successes in Afghanistan, this bolstered Democrats nationally in numbers, in numbers enough to finally take the House of Representatives and implace Nancy Pelosi as the new Speaker of the House.

House:
Democrats: 195 (+10)
Republicans: 185 (-6)
Reform Coalition: 55 (-4)

Senate Layout

The Senate had a number of interesting campaigns and possible candidates. In the TX 2002 Senatorial Election, former President Ross Perot was mentioned as a big possible candidate in the election but would turn it down. Democrats kept the Senate but made no gains, the Republicans and Reform Coalitionists also didn't gain one seat. One of the freshly elected Senators to an already Republican seat would be former Republican VP nominee Elizabeth Dole.

Senate:
Democrats: 54 (-)
Republicans: 43 (-)
Reform Coalition: 3 (-)

Other Layout

Gubernatorial Elections were the other elections to watch, but for the most part it remained the same as the lines that separated the Democrats, Republicans and Reform Coalition would remain the same, mostly. The Reform Coalition became the big party in the news for a while as Representative Ron Paul was running under the Reform Coalition banner for the Texas Governorship and it was one of the closest races against incumbent Governor George W. Bush. Incumbent Governor Jesse Ventura would also run, this time for reelection and would win. Another major race would be the bloody California race against Governor Gray Davis and Republican Bill Simon, which Simon won with 42% of the vote.

January 28th, 2003: American and Coalition forces would begin an all out offensive to push the Taliban out of hiding. Using similar tactics used in the Anaconda Plan2, US and Coalition forces are successful as a number of remaining Taliban forces are rooted out, though the remaining either try to escape or go into everymore hiding and prepared for an insurgent war against the American and Coalition forces.

February 1st, 2003: Tragedy hits as the Space Shuttle Columbia breaks up on reentry over Texas. President Nunn would address the nation over the tragedy. Nunn remarks "This day has brought a pain to this countries very heart and soul,....The Columbia is lost, all aboard did not survive.

February 16th, 2003: In a move that was somewhat unexpected. Representative Dennis Kucinich of Ohio would announce his candidacy for the Democratic Nomination. This comes as everyone was awaiting the decision of wether or not Vice President Kennedy would run. Kucinihc would declare that his run was against the "warmongering internationalist Nunn Administration"

February 25th, 2003: Republican begin to blame another in there losses in the House. This is ultimately equated that it was former Speaker Dick Armey's fault after all the little bigoted comments he made through out the 2000's. Soon now just Representative Armey now has calls to resign from House Minority Leader.

February 26th, 2003: The first identified case of Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome(SARS) is reported when an American businessman is admitted to the Vietnam France Hospital in Hanoi, Vietnam. Afterwards the businessman and an doctor would die, this would then result in the World Health Organization being alerted.

March 1st, 2003: Pakistani forces capture several minor and several medium level leaders in a number of terrorists groups, several of them are connected to the 9/20 attacks on the United States, one being Mustafa al-Hawsawi.

March 7th, 2003: After a battle, Dick Armey takes the advice as it was called but takes it one step further and resigns from Congress all together. This causes a crisis on who would be the right choice for House Minority Leader.

March 9th, 2003: Energy Secretary Ralph Nader announces his candidacy for the Reform Coaltion Nomination and the Presidency.

March 12th, 2003: Senator Elizabeth Dole of North Carolina would announce that she was running for the Republican nomination in 2004. Dole would call for "strong conservative leadership".

March 15th, 2003: Jiang Zemin, the President of the People's Republic of China would be replaced by the "fresh face" of Hu Jintao.

March 20th, 2003: Senator John McCain would announce his candidacy for the Republican nomination. McCain would say that his run was for reform, foreign and national security and continuing the War of Terrorism.

April 11th, 2003: Vice President Kennedy announces that he is running for the Democratic Nomination for President. Kennedy says that he will continue the that President Nunn laid out on the War on Terrorism. With a favorable support for the Nunn Administration, it seems that Kennedy could be a force to be reckoned with come November.

April 21st, 2003: Former Nevada Governor Aaron Russo would declare his candidacy for the Reform Coalition nomination. Russo would quickly garner support from the Libertarian side of the Reform Coalition.

Interesting Developments in your alt 2003...The Primary/Convention fight between Russo and Nader should be interesting to say the least...same for the McCain and Liddy. My bets would have to be John McCain with a Southern Conservative on the bottom of the ticket(Keyes, or Watts would be a good choice) would be able allow for the GOP to become competetive in the Mountain West for the 1st time in a long time. It should be interesting how the race turns out.

With Ross Perot being one of my favorite politicians of all time, and the excellent thought and skill woven into this timeline, this has become one of my favorites. I wish only for more updates.

May 3rd, 2003: Education Secretary Lamar Alexander of Tennessee would announce his candidacy for the Republican nomination. Though with a fair amount of credentials, Alexander would be overshadowed by McCain and Dole in the Republican race.

June 23rd, 2003: In a close decision, the United States Supreme Court upholds affirmative action in their close vote of 5 to 4 in the Grutter v. Bollinger case. With this, affirmative action becomes a medium issues in the upcoming 2004 election.

July 7th, 2003: In a suprise, Corsica votes in a narrow margin for increased autonomy from France.

July 23rd, 2003: In the first time, Afghan troops are a major part of one of the American and Coalition forces operations. Operation: Warrior's Charge would be a sweeping move to root out any Taliban and Al-Qaeda and also to secure enemy weapon's caches in part of eastern Afghanistan. Warrior's Charge would be a success as this continues to keep American's hopes high for victory.

August 3rd, 2003: Democratic Senator Lloyd Bentsen dies of a massive stroke shortly after declaring that he wasn't seeking another term as Senator of Texas. Mourning happens through out Texas, even Governor Paul mourns, but out of this tragedy would come division sadly.

August 10th, 2003: The media would move in on the news that former Attorney General William "Bill" Clinton and his spouse Hillary would be divorcing. This news adds to the crumbling political future of Bill Clinton and the general statement that begins to float about that "how could America have every considered electing this guy?".

August 20th, 2003: After waiting and taking his time for over two weeks, Governor Paul announces his choice to replace Senator Bentsen's Senate seat, the choice would shock many as Paul announced that H. Ross Perot Jr. would be the choice. Some cried out that Perot Jr. had no true political experience, others decried a Perot-esque monarchy forming in Texas. After a fight over Paul's choice for the seat, Perot Jr. would be officially seated in the Senate.

August 24th, 2003: With the growing support of what is beginning to be called "Neo-Rockefeller Republicanism" in the north, conservative radio host Rush Limbaugh would ignite what some called the "GOP Civil War". Limbaugh said to "boot the dirty northern groups" from the Republican party as they weren't "real conservatives" in his eyes. Senator Romney, the major leader of Neo-Rockefellerism would fire back at Limbaugh, saying that "Maybe we should boot you Rush".

September 5th, 2003: After the Nader and Russo camps vie for an endorsement from Senator Warren Beatty of CA, a shocker appears as Beatty announces that he is running for the Reform Coalition nomination. This huge shakeup seems to have a three way fight for the Reform Coalition in the making.

September 22nd, 2003: Vice President Kennedy is hit with a scandal as one of his charitable organizations is linked to Venezuelan leader Hugo Chavez. This would come after Kennedy gave a firm and strong speech declaring a "Strong voice against dictators like Castro, Chavez.." under a Kennedy Administration. Though is is not even close to swing enough support against Kennedy, in polls a sizable number of former Kennedy supporters now are "Undecided" in the Democratic race.

October 9th, 2003: In one of the handfull of Democratic Presidential Debates, Kennedy and Kucinich debate as Kennedy tries to show support for the Nunn Administration and also to try and defend his charitable organization and their ties with Chavez. Kucinich blasts and tries to hammer in that Kennedy is more of the same "Shoot 'em up Democrats" that America needs to get away from. Kucinich hammers at Kennedy's scandal but it seems that Kucinich tries through out this to not say the name "Hugo Chavez", trying to break the perception the Kennedy camp created that Kucinich would be "Buddies with Chavez".

October 10th, 2003: Conservative radio host Rush Limbaugh would admit that he is addicted to prescription pain killers, and will seek treatment immediately.

December 25th, 2003: Pakistani President Perves Musharraf would be assassinated after coming off the heels of an failed assassination attempt shortly before this. With the assassination of Musharraf, Zafarullah Khan Jamali would succeed him as President.

Oh here comes the primaries...Governor Paul and Senator Perot Jr(Texas is awesome ITTL), the ensuing Nader vs Russo vs Beaty fight should be enough lol but all three parties seem to be pretty nasty fights. We must love the partisan age we live in.

January 4th, 2004: After the "Rose Revolution" in Georgia, Mikheil Saakashvili would be elected President of Georgia in a huge landslide. President Nunn would be one of the first international leaders to extend there best wishes to the young leader.

January 14th, 2004: The Democrats hold the District of Columbia Primary and Kennedy would easily win but Kucinich would grab up 15% of the vote in a shock.

January 15th, 2004: Four days before the Republicans own Iowa Caucus, the candidates would meet for their last debates before the start of the primary season. The continuation of the "GOP Civil War" was evident in the debate as Dole struck first at McCain and continued this through the debate. McCain returned in kind and took a number of bites at Dole. Through this, Alexander remained above the fray in hopes of showing himself above partisanship. One quip backfired on Dole as she said to McCain "Senator, you can't lead!", in response McCain said "Well Senator, I have to say, you can't lead, If I'm not mistaken you've been in office less than two years..". McCain ripped Dole to bits as many said and McCain won the debate hands down.

January 19th, 2004: With results from the debates between the candidates, Iowa was the next step for the Republicans. In a fair results, Elizabeth Dole wins the Iowa Caucus over both John McCain, Lamar Alexander and other small candidates. This loss bounces off McCain as he is expecting an easy win in the upcoming New Hampshire Primary but for Alexander it was nearly a death blow as he took a fair 3rd place.

The Democratic Iowa Caucus opens as Vice President Kennedy is running against the insurgent Representative Dennis Kucinich. In open polls, Kennedy was leading in the 90's somewhere compared to the 3-4% that Kucinich was garnering but, Kucinich seemed not to be swayed by polls and said that he would continue his campaign all his way to the Convention. The results were predicted as Kennedy overwhelmingly won with over 90% of the vote compared to Kucinich's 5%.

January 27th, 2004: Republicans and Democrats draw up the clear projected winners of the New Hampshire Primary, the two are Vice President Kennedy and Senator McCain. The votes flow in for both parties on the 27th and McCain wins big as Alexander squeaks out 2nd over Dole. For Democrats, Kucinich continues his insurgent campaign and takes 13% of the vote.

January 30th, 2004: Education Secretary Lamar Alexander of Tennessee would announce that he was dropping out of the Presidential Race. Alexander wouldn't sight anyone or wouldn't drop any hints at who he would endorse.

February 1st, 2004: Super Bowl XXXVIII is held as after wins by the more projected teams like the Rams and Buccaneers the years back and many hoped that an underdog would win this time around. The underdog, the Carolina Panthers would win in a suprising fashion and this would deny the New England Patriots a win once again.

February 2nd, 2004: President Nunn submits a number of budgetary proposals to Congress. These budgetary amounts to go to fund infrastructure revival in Afghanistan and also to military funding in the War in Afghanistan. Congress, after going over it, would approve these budgetary changes. Representative Kucinich would take time off from his campaign that day and be one of the major dissenting voices in Congress.

February 3rd, 2004: Mini Tuesday arises as seven states hold their primaries and or caucuses. Democrats knew that Kennedy would be triumphant but Kucinich continued to hold on and leach some liberal voters away from Kennedy. As for Republicans, it would be a fight for each vote and delegate as McCain and Dole pummeled each other. (A layover of these will be in a separate post)

February 5th-23rd, 2004: The Haiti Rebellion of 2004 or the "Great Haitian Burn" as it was also called, would be an attempted coup of Haitian President Jean-Bertrand Aristide. The United States and other nations would quickly move to send interim peacekeepers into Haiti. These Peacekeepers fought with the National Revolutionary Front for the Liberation of Haďti, this would result in victory and a return to normality for Haiti or what was normal for Haiti.

February 7th, 2004: The Michigan and Washington Caucuses would results for both of them, victories by Kennedy and McCain. For the Republicans, McCain won the states by big margins but as for the Democrats, Kucinich got 7% of the vote in Michigan but the big suprise can up when 19% of the vote went to Kucinich in Washington.

February 8th, 2004: McCain got another break and easily won the Maine Caucus over Dole. As for the Democrats, Kennedy won the Caucus but had to face Kucinich in what some said was growing into a competitive campaign of sorts, Kucinich took 22% of the vote.

February 9th, 2004: Under tight security, NATO Secretary General Jaap de Hoop Scheffer visited Kabul and met with Afghaninterim president Hamid Karzai.

Super tuesday seems to be rolling up pretty quickly...So I guess the question is will Johnny Boy be able to rap up the nomination with it(I doubt it) and it will probably be a long primary fight to the convention. To bad Buchanan's not running with the reform party, cuz he could probably assemble some electoral votes if McCain gets the eventual nod.

February 10th, 2004: Elizabeth Dole would get her own break as Virginia and Tennessee would hold there primaries. Dole would easily win Tennessee and though closer than expected, Dole still carried Virginia by a fair margin. For the Democrats, Kennedy won big as Kucinich got 5% in each state.

February 14th, 2004: The District of Columbia Caucus and the Nevada Caucus would be held as Kennedy won both as Kucincih fought with Kennedy and took 10% in DC and 14% in Nevada. For the Republicans, McCain took DC and Nevada by fair margins.

February 17th, 2004: Kennedy and McCain continued there march but Dole and Kucinich continued there campaigns. Wisconsin came next and the primary was won by McCain and Kennedy as Dole picked up 44% of the vote and Kucinich with 11%.

February 24th, 2004: Two Caucuses and a primary was held as Dole bounced back some and won the Idaho Caucus and Utah Primary and McCain picked up Hawaii. Kennedy won all three states but Kucinich won a suprising 30% of the vote in Hawaii, 12% in Utah and 10% in Idaho.

February 26th, 2004: Secretary of Defense Bob Kerrey and Ambassador Madeline Albright would attend and speak at a graduation of Afghani policemen in Kandahar.

February 28th, 2004: In Taiwan the "228 hand in hand rally" would be held as about a million Taiwanese citizens linked hands and formed a human chain link line to protest against the aggressive moves that the People's Republic of China has taken towards Taiwan. Though having sympathies to a peaceful reunification of Taiwan and China, President James Soong would call for peaceful moves during the "Peaceful Memorial Day".

March 2nd, 2004: "Super Tuesday" came as both McCain and Dole were duking it out for the nomination and Kennedy was fending off the insurgent Kucinich. (This will have a separate post)

March 3rd. 2004: At a ceremony held in Kabul, Afghanistan, Afghani and Americans delegates signed a contract detailing assistance in a major irrigation re-build project near the capital. This would be a fraction of the other plans for nationwide reconstruction of Afghanistan.

March 9th, 2004: Four primaries and a caucus would be held as McCain fought hard to make headway as Dole led in Texas, Mississippi and Louisiana as she was neck and neck with McCain in Florida. The results were Dole winning TX, LA and MS as McCain took FL and American Samoa. For the Democrats it was a more healthier environment for Kennedy as he won very big as American Samoa was the place where Kucinich really put up any fight. Kennedy carried every state as Kucinich got 20% in American Samoa.

March 11th, 2004: Terrorist attacks occur in Madrid, Spain and bombs are used to attack the Train system of Madrid. This attack would be found out to be the work of Muslim extremist elements in Spain. These attacks would shake Spain as the two main political parties would begin to bring up controversy about the handling of the attacks and would hit each other politically as the Spanish Legislative Election was only three days away.

March 13th, 2004: Dole won the Kansas Caucus by a fair margin over McCain as a Kennedy victory was a breeze as Kucinich gained 14% of the vote.

March 14th, 2004: The Spanish Legislative Election of 2004 would be a close one as polls weren't even sure who would win the legislative election as the Socialists and Peoples Party fought tooth and nail for victory. The Socialists won but it would be close as they had 160 seats now to the Peoples Party's 152 seats. José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero would become Prime Minister.

March 14th, 2004: The Russian Presidential Election was held and incumbent Vladamir Putin would easily win reelection with over 70% of the vote compared to the nearest contender, the Communist candidate with about 15% of the vote.

March 16th, 2004: The Illinois Primary would be forecasted to be wins by both Kennedy and McCain but everyone was watching how the other candidates would do in the primary. Dole won in the southern portions of Illinois easily but couldn't muster anything like a upset but did good in the state, Kucinich receive a suprising 9% as many had said he would at least break into the 10 point range.

Hmm....Vice President Kennedy should have the nomination pretty much sown up right now, can't wait to see who he picks for his running mate. I think Dole has a slim lead in Delegates, so the civil war continues...

Do the Democrats use the 15% threshold rule for allocating delegates?

Thanks for the maps Andy, It seems Liddy is outperforming Johnny Boy in the Midwest and in the South, but she really hasn't had any close states outside of those regions either, showing a clear divide with voters. McCain should be ahead in delegate totals since he picked up the big states of New York, Illinois, Florida, Ohio, and California.

March 17th, 2004: Vice President Kennedy declares "Utter Victory" over Representative Kucinich. After smashing him in the primaries and caucuses again and again, Kennedy also declares that the Democratic Party is now marching towards victory in November.

March 20th, 2004: Republic of China(Taiwan) Presidential Elections would be held as incumbent James Soong would be reelected over his DPD and KMT opponents by a fair margin. Soong would declare "Peace with the United States and the People's Republic".

March 20th, 2004: McCain and Dole split the two caucuses held in Alaska and Wyoming. McCain would win Alaska by a fair margin over Dole and she would go and pick up WY. For Kennedy, his "utter victory" declaration would drive down Kucinich's numbers a little. 11% went to Kucinich in WY and 20% in AK.

March 21st, 2004: Malaysian Elections are held as the Barisan Nasional wins in a huge landslide over the Democratic Action Party and the Barisan Alternative candidates. Abdullah Ahmad Badawi would continue as Prime Minister of Malaysia.

March 21st-28th,  2004: Regional elections in France would spell out a victory for the conservative right as they overtook the Socialist and the Left after "fatigue" in a way for the Left in power for so long would rear it's head finally. This would be a major blow to the current Socialist Government.

March 22nd, 2004: In an interview, Vice President Kennedy would answer the question that was on many peoples minds, "Who would be Kennedy's VEEP?". Kennedy would say that he would officially choose someone around June and would begin to release possibles in the coming weeks. The media though would have some idea's of it's own and would begin to release possible VEEPS lists.

March 27th, 2004: The Expatriates Caucus would results in an easy win for Kennedy over Dennis Kucinich.

March 29th, 2004: NATO expands as seven new European nations are admitted into the North Atlantic Treaty Organization. President Nunn would call this an "Expansion of Security and Assistance".

April 8th, 2004: Congress would vote down the Stem Cell Research Act of 2004 in a close vote in both the House and the Senate after Republicans led the charge to defeat the bill. In the Senate it would be a bitter battle as many of the more liberal "Neo-Rockefeller" Republicans would vote for the act, quickly gaining the scorn from conservatives and GOP leaders.

April 8th, 2004: A Humanitarian Ceasefire Agreement would occur in the Darfur region of Sudan. This agreement would shoot for peace but a number of groups would not attend and join in the peace agreement. With that, peace would not be fully established and the peace agreement seemed to fall through.

April 13th, 2004: The Colorado Caucus would be another victory for both the McCain and Kennedy camps. Kucinich would garner 14% in the Caucus as Dole fell far from winning over John McCain.

April 17th, 2004: The North Carolina and Virgin Islands Caucuses would be held as Dole tasted some hope as she won her state of North Carolina by a big margin over McCain. Kennedy added both to his victory list as Kucinich picked up 14% and 10% in the caucuses.

April 20th, 2004: Six aid workers in Afghanistan are captured by Taliban forces. Soon Coalition forces would move this up to the top of the list to get the captured aid workers back alive. The captured aid workers would also become something of a buzz story as it reached the United States.

April 24th, 2004: The Cypriot Annan Plan Referendum to unite the Turkish and Greek portions of the Island would fail. Over 60% of Turkish Cypriots would vote "YES" as Greek Cypriots voted a little over 70% for "NO". The reception to this was ranged as the United States had tried to push for a more reformed and fair to all parties plan for Union. US Ambassador to the UN Madeline Albright would give the more known rebuttal to the split votes on "YES" and "NO", saying that "This may have set back the reunification ideals today, it won't stall them forever".

Why is Vice President Kennedy picking his running mate so early, I think its still tradition that you wait till as close as to the Convention as you can get. For example McCain had the nomination wrapped up by mid march, but didn't pick Paling till August IIRC. Especially as an sitting Vice President, he will probably take time to get back involved with the White House, Fundraise and clarify his message against the GOP. I am wondering who might McCain and Kennedy pick for their running mates though.

The 2005 legislative elections in France will be interesting... cohabitation?

April 24th, 2004: The Guam Caucus would vote easily for Kennedy and McCain as both winner won the caucus in big double digits over their opponents.

April 26th, 2004: Top diplomats of NATO's North Atlantic Council visited Kabul, Afghanistan for the first time since it took over command of ISAF.

April 27th, 2004: The Pennsylvania Primary would be the biggest one as Dole, McCain, Kennedy and Kucinich rolled on the state. All campaigned hard as McCain saw this as the last thing to push Dole out of the race. In a seven point victory, John McCain would win the primary and would be basically crowned the Republican nominee for President.

April 29th, 2004: The Armenian Genocide Recognition Act of 2004 would be voted down in Congress as it was said that it would hurt the United States relationship with the Republic of Turkey. Supporters fired back as some went further and said "this first, what's next, not recognizing the holocaust during World War II?" Uproar began in the Congress as there supporters of the act would vow to bring it up the next if they had to.

April 29th, 2004: State Secretary David Boren would finall decide to resign from his post as the head of the States Department. Boren would say that he wanted desperately to "return to a quieter and more private life" and only the war of terrorism had kept him as Vice President(1997-2001) and as Secretary of State(2001-2004). This would shake up the Nunn Administration as they would soon look towards someone that could fill out the post.

April 30th, 2004: Senator Elizabeth Dole would officially drop out of the Presidential race after a bitter run against John McCain. Dole would call for "All Republicans to get behind McCain for Victory" in November. Though McCain accepted this graciously as he could.

May 1st, 2004: The European Union would expand as ten new nations would become apart of the EU. These nations would be the Czech Republic, Hungary, Malta, Poland, Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia, Slovakia, Cyprus and Slovenia.

May 4th, 2004: Coalition forces would find the bodies of the six aid workers, all would be dead as there bodies were would in a precarious van in Kabul. This was seen as a way to threaten the Coalition forces. President Nunn would quickly give his sorrowful condolences to the families of the victims.

May 4th, 2004: Coming off the heels of Elizabeth Dole's drop out from the Republican race, the Indiana Primary would be a breeze for John McCain as he was popular in the rust belt and cruised through with over 60% of the vote. Democrats would have an easy primary of there own as Kucinich only garnered 10% of the vote against Vice President Kennedy.

May 9th, 2004: Akhmad Kadyrov, President of the Chechen Republic, would be assassinated when a landmine placed under a VIP stage during a World War II memorial parade in Grozny detonates and kills that appointed Chechen Leader. Sergei Abramov would become the interim Chechen President afterwards.

May 9th-15th, 2004: The "Big Five" for possible VEEPS for Vice President Kennedy would begin to be released and some were a suprise. The first and biggest circulated name, House Majority Leader Dick Gephardt, a Missourian could balance the ticket and Gephardt could bring in support from the South and with labor groups.

The second and one of the suprises, Representative Dan Glickman of Nebraska, Glickman if picked would make history as being Jewish would make him the first time a Jewish American would be one a major parties ticket, Glickman though is not really well known in a national sense and that could be a big minus in such a race.

The third would be Senator Albert Gore Jr of Tennessee, the former Vice Presidential nominee and Senate Majority Whip, Gore could help rein in the South and play up his "centrist" views to moderates.

The fourth and would be Governor Mark Warner of Virginia, only in office for little over two years, another southern could help Kennedy out in the South.

The fifth and final would be the suprise name of Washington Governor Gary Locke. A former WA state representative turned Governor, Locke could make history as the first Asian American to be on a major parties ticket and might try and balance the ticket and bring back some of the support of liberals but for all that, Locke was seen as the lowest to be chosen on this "Big Five" VEEP choices.
