If I campaign all day Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday, it basically means that I'm buying 30-second spots on prime-time television for one hundred thousand dollars per spot.  Well, okay 400K during a first-run episode of The Simpson's, 40K during a news show, but let's just say 100K for the sake of the argument.  So campaigning means I get 30 seconds of your time every thirty minutes over a four-hour period each of those nights, at a cost of about five million dollars.

On the other hand, if I announce that I "suspend" my campaign...   Well, let's see.  I'll switch to CNN.  Hmmm, they're talking about McCain and "the crisis."  Let's switch to HN.  Okay, they're trying to sell me some Levitra.  But I bet when I come back in two minutes they'll be trying to sell me 700 billion dollars worth of junk that I don't need.  Let's switch to Fox.  Oh, jackpot, baybee.  They're talking about the "unprecedented action by McCain..."  Let's switch to MSNBC.  Buchanan's on Butch and they're talking about whether McCain is "putting off the populist faction of his base..."  And Butch has used the word "suspended" about five times in the last twenty seconds.  Frankly, I think she totally understands what he's up to.

You get the picture.  If he campaigns, it costs him millions for a few reminders of his existence.  Reminders that I may or may not see, depending on how often I need to refill my glass.  Or how often I need take a dump.  (more often than usual, what with all this talk of a taxpayer-funded bailout of financial institutions.)  But if he "suspends" his campaigns, then he gets wall-to-wall, around-the-clock coverage.  Gratis.

Genius or suicide?  Only time will tell, but he was very clever bastard, wasn't he.

I still think its extremely ridiculous. Especially since now whatever plan has failed and McCain isnt in washington anymore. So he threw a big hissy for nothing.

That was just the Plan Mark II.  Mark III will come out tomorrow.

Pure genius if he was shorting Washington Mutual (yeah I know there's a ban on shorting the financials right now).

I still stand by what I said earlier. It's still too early to know for sure and I suspect it may be a bit too heavily dependent on media spin and I suspect McCain is not going to have the necessary advantage there.

And of course it doesn's really seem to be swinging his way right now. On the other hand, it does show that McCain is a lot cooler than Obama. Wink

Still Phil, how is this forum more pro-Obama than pro-McCain?  I think it's pretty even.

I think you only have to look at the first page of this thread to see that.

Not only that, all you have to look at is the stupid hack polls that have been posted recently, like "Should McCain and Palin just drop out?",  and the stupid hack post names for articles that are much more neutral than the names suggest.

Started by how many people?  One or two of the usual suspects, I'd wager.

No. There's no way I'm even entertaining this one. Sorry, dude. It doesn't even compare.

I'd be interested in what others think.  Not discounting you at all, Phil.  But do the rest of you think this is an Obama echo chamber?

It has its moments...like any other political forum on the internet. It was Obama for awhile...then some McCain....then there was alot with Palin.

There's a swarm effect on bad or embarrassing news, which in recent days has tended to favor Obama.

This sh**t had better blow up in his face big time, but this is the American public we're talking about, so who knows if it hurts him.

I think it was siimply intended to shake Obama up, if McCain wins big tonight, he'll look brilliant; if McCain loses the debate, he's probably finished unless a war breaks out in the middle east.

Granted it's the same five or six, Smiley but they are vocal.  How many completely substance-less threads did we have on Palin (with both of us calling it a GOP plot.)  Smiley

McCain already won the debate.

Unfortunately, we won't really know until election day.  I think the idea behind the action was good, but the management of it has been poor.  We'll see how the legislation works out.

I think all McCain accomplished was a couple of bad days of publicicty.  Will a couple bad days publicity lose him an election a month out?  I doubt it, but if the past is any indictator a shift of 1%-2% can make a difference.
