POLITICO:
Sen. Barack Obama (D-Ill.) on Monday will launch a multimedia campaign to draw attention to the involvement of Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) in the “Keating Five” savings-and-loan scandal of 1989-91, which blemished McCain’s public image and set him on his course as a self-styled reformer.

Retaliating for what it calls McCain's “guilt-by-association” tactics, the Obama campaign is e-mailing millions of supporters a link to a website, KeatingEconomics.com, which will have a 13-minute documentary on the scandal beginning at noon Eastern time on Monday. The overnight e-mails urge recipients to pass the link on to friends.

Oh boy, this is going to get ugly.

One can only hope that the Obama campaign doesn't take their eye of the ball. Let the McCain campaign engage in petty character attacks. The Obama campaign should run on the economy and against the dismal Bush/Cheney/GOP economic record of the last 8 years.

I imagine that all of these guilt by association attacks will only supress turnout of the undecideds and independents. Although usually surpressing turnout is something that the GOP preferse, this time the Dems have their own good GOTV and McCain needs some of those undecideds to break for him. Going nasty is not going to help him.

The McCain campaign know that once they open this up that it will be played both ways...they aren't stupid. But perhaps the McCain team feel that moving the discussion to 'who has creepier associates' is better than talking about the economy (the story for the last 3 weeks) or health care (which is what Obama is pushing now).

while it could be argued that associations are fair game, associations of associations are not.

Looks like Obama is not going to merely respond to the Ayers attacks tit for tat.  He's going to tie his counterattack into the current financial crisis.
