Possible Republican contenders in 2012?

What about Mitch Daniels and John Ensign?
Sure, they are longshots but Ensign is a western popular, young and conservative senator (has reelection in 2012 but Nevada law might allow him to run also for the senate, don't know), and if Daniels win his reelection campaign handily he will be a rather popular governor of a swing state in an important area.

Daniels had a very bad first term and he should count his blessings that he is performing so well right now. A year ago he looked like he would lose. He also has some other issues that make him unsuitable.

Ensign would be a great choice and its a shame he had to take over the NRSC during this bad cycle. Though not his fault he could easily get socked with the blame for the loses.

I'd love for Ensign to run. I doubt he'll be blamed for the Senate losses this year. He'd be one of my top choices.

Names that I think are likely to run are Romney, Huckabee, Palin, Thune, and Pawlenty. I think there's a 50/50 chance that Jindal runs, depending on Obama's popularity. Pence seems like another possibility, if he isn't running for Lugar's Senate seat (who will then be 80-years-old, so I think there's a good chance that he retires).

Lugar is getting buzz as being a part of Obama's bipartisan "dream team" cabinet so Pence could get his seat as soon as January.  He'd be one of the top contenders to be appointed.

John Ensign seems attractive, but doesn't he go to a Pentecostal Church where people pray "charismatically"?  Personally, what church the guy goes to doesn't matter to me, but seems like it could hurt him among the electorate.

after 4 years of president obama, the american people may be in the mood for a studious, grown-up in '12.

plus, kyl is more than acceptable to the republican base.
